Steering squeak

I know this has been raised before - but none of the posters who have described this problem have actually come back to say what the source of the squeak was, or how they got rid of it!

I have a squeak / creak noise from the steering wheel of my w202 which is noticeable at low speeds - It seems to be coming from the lower rubber gaiter / seal where the steering wheel shaft goes into the firewall as I turn the steering wheel - but I cant be sure - you know how elusive these things can be.

Anyone here solved this problem before? Was it simply a bit of lubrication on the boot - or was it something more involved / expensive to sort out?

I've just had this problem with my 1999 C240. As per other posts here, and according to dealership in Leicester, the problem was a "steering damper", also described as a "shock absorber" on the dealership invoice. Repair came to abt £125.00 - this included 30 mins on the diagnostic computer, part, and labour. I thought it was well worth it - relieved to find it was nothing serious and car came out A1 on the computer.

Mine doesnt squeak, it groans - sounds like I have the same problem as you (mines a C240 1999). bah £125 :(

I cant afford to get it serviced as it is :(

The steering damper on a w124 is about £30 , and is an easy change to do yourself, even i can do it Karl ....

Can't imagine yours is much different ?

Sounds like the majority of the cost was the diagnostic and the labour ....

Get out and order one Karl , and you can lay in the rain over the weekend and fit it ! ;)

Is it THAT easy Howard? :p

There's a low groan coming from mine, assume it's the steering, so will ask IBW to have a look and add it to the list of work to be done  Probably be cheaper to lease one of them new R classes for a year than run mine at the minute...

Eezzee-peezzee! W202 steering damper about the same (£33 IIRC) and took about 15 minutes to change.

Good luck!

£125? :eek::eek: (/falls off chair)

Well, repair of steering creak/moan/groan worked out as follows:
part - £30
labour - £30
30 mins diagnostic - £45
plus VAT - £20
car in 8.30 am, all done by 10.00 am
I accept the dealership maxed out the cost, but can't fault them for doing a bona fide repair.

Thanks guys, I had almost given up hope of a reply - but as usual some of you came through!!

I will definitely have a look at replacing my steering damper - It seems fairly easy to replace myself and at 30 odd quid it will not break the bank.

Just for the record, I spent Saturday squeezing in a set of 16.5 cm Blaupunkt component speakers into the front doors of my W202.

Sounds a whole lot better than the stock speakers - so at least if I can't get rid of my creaky / squeaky / groany steering, I can now drown it out with quality sounds.

Thanks again

W220 Steering noise

Hi guys, sounds like I may have a similar problem on the 2002 S 320 CDI. Anyone know if it is the same set up and what is involved in replaing the part on an S Class?

It never ceases to amaze me what i can learn just from reading through randon posts. My w124 has a similar groan / squeak. It isn't that annoying and i thought i would look into it at some point. I thought it was squeaking bushes on one of the bottom suspension arms and was looking into buying a spring compression tool from the states. Looks like i've got myself a quick and easy fix.

Nice one guys.
