...a rental..not saying what !
Hi all...

Got a basic mb stereo in my 1999 pre facelift clk.. Ok it's got a cd changer in the boot and seems to have some type of phone function (there is a phone function on the front...press the button and it says 'not available', there is also a mic fitted near the drivers side sun visor so maybe a phone kit was there at some point). There is also a slot for something called a 'tape'?? ... No idea what one of those is though:D

Anyway, what I would like to do is replace with something with an iPod connection and Bluetooth...for phone. Any suggestions, Preferably something MB?

Thanks

You may want to do a little investigation before going out and buying a new head unit. I'm not sure on your particular model but some cars of the same era had an amplifier under the front floor mats and rather unusual speaker impedences which makes upgrading not so simple a task.

If you have a recomended specialist in your area that knows his onions he should be able to advise what you need but be careful of just changing the head unit as that may well not be a satisfactory update.

Thanks for that...already have an FM thingy...for some strange reason this (as in the very same unit) worked fine in my W203 but is hopeless in the 208..even though its a rag top...strange. The tape adaptor probably wont work as the tape sits behind a hinged 'door' which probably won't close with a piece of wire hanging out of the 'tape' and I suspect this means it wont play (maybe it will...dont know) guess I could try a tape strangely enough I don't have a single 1 left....

I have heard that there are some FM adaptors that can go in the antenna line...but havn't looked, seems a bit of a faff.

There was me thining that a quick change of head unit would be pip-pip and tickerty boo...ah well.

I'll have a look see what I can find out about the existing install.
cheers

I'm sure an installer will quickly sort it all out for you mate... and if you're not looking for audiophiles quality, there's pleant of cheerfully priced stuff that's surprisingly good.
If u were in England I'd say to go down to someone like halfords; they'd probably bung one in and if it didn't work... take it back out again ;-) at no monetary loss to you.

Hi,

first job i did on getting my clk last week....i'm still figuring out the steering wheel buttons, but apart from that it was plain sailing.

if you buy something with a standard iso connector - there are a couple of you'll need to make

1. add a switched live (required for most head units) - easy to pic up from the back of cigarette lighter - grey with pink stripe from memory

2. connect the permanent live to the correct space in the iso block (as per standard connections - the permanent (car) goes to switched (Stereo)

3. if you have the bose amp and speakers, you'll also need to connect the blue wire in the iso plug (car) to the amp switched output of the stereo to power it up.

(if you're changing wiring around, i'd move the stereo end, not the car end as then its easier to go back to original)

fitting a double din nav unit took about an hour, with the majority of that being cutting away the single din divider.

this worked for me, as i say i've got an adapter i'm hacking up at the moment to try and get the wheel buttons to work again, will keep you posted.

worth doing a search on here if you want to retrofit comand - good thread in the how to's on that i think (but might only apply to facelift - not sure)
