Stop start not working

Ignore silly comments about stop/start. Some people haven't progressed beyond the 20th century.

If you changed your battery recently, did you fit an AGM battery? AGM batteries are needed for their greater charge/discharge cycling capabilities and improved output.

If you have an AGM battery, then all the following conditions need to be met before stop/start will operate:
  • Engine and gearbox up to operating temperature
  • Car interior up to required temperature
  • Seat belt fastened
  • Parktronic not active
  • Footbrake pressed
  • Car not facing up steep hill
  • Doors and bonnet fully closed
  • Battery fully charged
Why criticise those who don't like Stop /Start?

In my experience over a number of cars it produces a relatively rougher start than the normal start and the lag on the restart can be problematic.

This has been discussed at length elsewhere.

You’re entitled to your opinion of course, but to me those who object to it come across as not understanding the technology and thus missing out. That’s a shame.

I do turn off Start/Stop at the start of each journey, BUT at the same time I would have it repaired it is it stopped working.

Apart from the fact that I don't like to have things that don't work as they should, I would want to know which component failed to cause Start/Stop to stop working.

Yes I am entitled to my opinion as are you. I didn't criticise you for your view.

How does not wanting to use it equate to not understanding the technology?

It is fairly simple and I have no issue in understanding it. As for missing out, on what?

Jerky restarts, lag in response with the restart etc.

Please don't feed the animals, some bite. 👍

The people who are pro Stop Strain really need to telephone a few mechanics !

I am pro 'everything-fitted-to-the-car-should-work-as-intended', even if I don't personally use that particular feature. Selective maintenance is never a good idea. Personal opinion.

And if you don't want to telephone even Mercedes themselves in a handbook give the lowdown .

I certainly wouldn't use it in inner cities ,if it was stop starting every few car lengths . Waiting at the lights etc or a junction I don't mind so much.

I've never turned off the stop/start on my C350 that I bought new in 2012. It's never hesitated to restart the engine when required, and it's always done so almost imperceptibly. The only clue is the car moving!

In the over 12 years I've had the car I've not experienced any issues with timing chains, starters, alternators or any of the other items people accuse stop/start of wearing out quickly. (Unless people blame start/stop for the new tyres, brake pads & discs, and windscreen wipers I've needed over the years!)

I replaced the battery once, when the car was ten years old, doing so because the start/stop wasn't working as often as it should. So it was a handy early warning that the battery was on the way out.

It's obviously not the only reason, but I suspect that the start/stop contributes to the car's relatively frugal petrol consumption. The 3.5 litre V6 naturally aspirated petrol engine is still returning an overall average mpg in the low 30s with mostly short local trips. On a run on mixed roads it gets into the low 40s.

1. Faux logic.....

I never use the built-in stanav, I use Waze instead. Does this mean that I shouldn't buy 'a car with built in satnav'... :D

2. Start/Stop is mandatory on all new cars in the UK and EU for around a decade now.

3. The chap is generally unhinged.... :D If you've seen his other clips, you'll know.

I couldn't agree more regarding Waze. It's saved my bacon so many times I now use it for local trips on roads I know well. Primarily as I may be warned of traffic jams, broken down vehicles, pot holes & even speed traps, - so much better than the OEM SatNavs in my Land Rover & Mercedes & SWMBO's Audi.

That's interesting; I wonder if MB have changed the way S/S works? On my S204, the thing that drove me demented about it was if you came to a stop (lights/level crossing etc) with S/S engaged, the engine would of course stop. I always liked to use the parking brake to avoid blinding the driver behind with the v. bright high level brake light. So the sequence was: come to a halt - foot on the brake - S/S kills the engine - apply parking brake - remove foot from foot brake - S/S starts the engine again!!

2 is incorrect Honda Civic 1.5 petrol turbo last model from 2019 up to 2022 doesn't have stop start.
