My subframe was condemned at mot last week
So I took it to mercedes and asked them what they're going to do about it.
It's booked in for tomorrow's inspection and I have been told I will have to pay for the bolts
If merc approve the replacement.
If anyone us interested ill keep you posted

I cant believe they are making you pay for the bolts.... I would argue that point if they go ahead with it. They usually do.

Thanks for that
If they go ahead with the work I'll let them do it first and argue the toss after
Worst case I'll pay fir bolts but what they going to do take them off
I want a car to use but not holding my breath

This 'paying for bolts ' thing has me intruiged . I can not see how it would make any sense just to replace the subframe without 'while you in there' replacing every wear item that bolts on to it ....ie EVERY item that bolts on to it ...OK , not the diff springs and shocks, brakes , granted.

But bolting back on numerous linkages/elsastomers/main rubber mounts , diff bushings of unknown age is something I would never do . I get it , MB do not want to pay for all that stuff and I have seen on here photos of a new subframe with main bushings and diff bushings already installed where the MB catalog clearly shows them as seperate items from the subframe p/n.

Almost like buying a 'short' engine and having to fit all the ancillaries from the old/blown engine to make it whole I am guessing MB has subframes prepared with main mountings intact to cut down on workshop time .

Having myself purchased every link, tie bar and bolt for the rear subframe of my C55 recently I know how that cost can add up to (possibly) more than a bare subframe costs.

So , OP , ask MB EXACTLY what they mean that they want you to pay for 'bolts' ...that could be very pricey for you without clarification from them.

Best of luck. Let us know how you get on. :thumb:

Old bolts being used is mentioned here in one of the many other threads we have on rear sub frames.

This is my receipt

I am intrigued to see what mine is like at its Mot the end of the month. Luckily mine has full history and (don’t know if it it means anything but) mine has had corrosion checked at every service but not sure this means the subframe you or others may know this? 👍

My tester will give it a good going over if I ask him too, we have a good relationship 👍

Yes, pls keep us posted. Don't be surprised if they ask you if you want any corroded brake lines replaced while they're in there. Saves dropping the subframe again...

Subframes rot from the inside. Very hard to spot before it actually forms a hole. MB service history is not essential. Our 2005 SLK subframe was replaced FoC by MB in late 2021.
