sudden power loss w202

whilst driving home on the motorway this evening at a steady 70ish i felt a sudden power loss,foot down to compensate,no gain whatsoever,noticed revs wouldn't exceed 3k,speed dropped to 40mph and thats where it stayed for the next eight miles,considered pulling on to hard shoulder for a look but decided to limp home.

when i got home switched her off then restarted her,fired up first time and revved through to red line, took her for a spin fault cleared,I'm thinking blocked fuel filter, but would be grateful for any input.

when i got home and let it idle it sounded as if it was running on 3,no smell of un burnt fuel though.
