Suitable disinfectant for steering wheels etc?

How about an air conditioning bomb to disinfect the whole interior and heater

Funnily enough, I was wondering this as my car is going in for a service tomorrow. It occurred to me that Bilt Hamber Citrus Bomb is anti-microbial and anti-bacterial.

I have emailed them to double check for COVID-19 and will just use this when the car is returned.

Thats all very well but IPA is hard to come by right now, most people don't even know what it is and I have only seen 'real' Hardware stores stocking it , and the two I know of have run out.
You can order it on line but the price has gone through the roof (if available) and you risk not getting the real thing.
I have enough to keep me going , But I don't hold out much hope of getting any locally any time soon.

Just done a few searches and see that online it has went a bit crazy.
Will ask tomorrow if there are any problems with supply at the moment.

Anti-bacterial won’t help as it’s a virus. I’m not sure this would be effective in this case as I doubt it can sanitise surfaces effectively.

Good point on cleaning wheel etc. Made me think though, I wonder if the garages are starting to wipe everything down on customers vehicles for their own protection, and if so will they be as careful what they use as the owners would be so as not to damage any finishings? You’d hope so. The garage where I take my car for service and mot are a fairly clean outfit, seat covers used and always seem to be wearing clean disposable gloves. The place where I take my work Hi-Lux though are scruffy and it always has oil/grease on the steering wheel and instruments, door handle so needs a going over with wipes. It’s a Toyota though, so mainly plastic inside!
The place I take my motorbike looks as sterile as an operating theatre!

Bilt Hamber replied this morning and confirmed that it does kill coronovirus. They are an excellent company.

The guys here are wearing fresh gloves in every car, seat covers etc and I am religiously wiping reception/pin machine down every hour. I have had a few high risk customers who have informed me of such when they have dropped their cars off. I have been wiping every single surface/handles/stalks in their cars with anti bac wipes on collection before they get in whilst they are here, wiping keys down when I take them and when I hand them back. To be honest, I hadn't thought of damaging surfaces, more trying not to kill my customers. I would hope that anyone worried about this would tell me so I either dont do it, or they can check what I am using to make sure they are happy with it.

I wouldn't worry too much, if anything is going to survive a virus....it will be a Toyota HiLux ! :p

Just as an aside ... I had this circular from MB Guildford on Friday:

I have detailed below some of the specific actions we have taken and processes we have implemented to make your dealings with us convenient, enjoyable and, most of all, safe:

Your safety whilst visiting our Retailers
  • Each member of the Sandown team is fully up-to-speed on the actions we are taking and behaviour expected to protect you and our team

  • We have cancelled all offsite meetings and training for Sandown employees

  • There are very visible notices of appropriate sanitation procedures in all areas
  • All high contact surfaces are cleaned frequently throughout the day
  • Disposable gloves are available at all of our entrances
  • Credit card machines are wiped down after each transaction
  • All demonstrators are thoroughly cleaned by valeters wearing gloves and additional cleaning materials are available in demonstrators for your use if required
  • Your steering wheel is sanitised and covered with a steering wheel cover before any service work is carried out
  • Our technicians and valeters wear gloves at all times while working on your vehicle.

I have a box of glass wipes cheap as chips . Just right to clean the steering wheels with ..And for my driving glasses at the same time

It may make you feel better to have a clean steering wheel but they do not kill viruses

TBH I use the clear dettol spray which comes in a clear bottle and some blue and green stickers on - it has no odour and it works well. I use it on nearly everything - no damage, no smell, no residue.

It's not been tested on this strain of coronavirus (Because it's not available for testing) but it works on other strains, colds, flus etc, so its a good bet that it kills corona.

I think it's great stuff. Doesn't damage leather etc, just like water.

We are using IPA 70% solution here at work wiping everything down several times a day Trucks, key pads, door handles, switches, telephones the list is truly endless.

I did look into Zoflora for the cars as there seems to be an abundance in shops but on their website nearly word for word the same as above but does state it needs a five minute dwell time on the surface so not ideal to leave the car dripping wet with electronics.

So the cars have had a steam cleaned and wiped down with IPA solution (no damaged) and then followed up with halfords trim cleaner.

Gloves worn and hands washed prior to entering the car and a wiped down again when i exit.

Also read that the virus cannot live longer then 72 hours outside a host so on a Friday i'm extra vigilant when wiping down before sealing the car for the weekend.

Most probably do anyway but spray the cloth when wiping down electronics and make sure the engine is off and key out of the ignition if using an alcohol base cleaner be wary of fumes. I found out the hard way years ago wiping down a control panel with IPA and the fumes fried the circuit board.
