Just brought a W220 S Class S55 AMG back from Kent to Reading and was surprised by the fuel economy towards the end of the journey.

30.4mpg...achieved in the cut and thrust of a busy late afternoon on the M25 and M3

Very Impressive. That's what I roughly get from my C180. :o

V8 or V8 Kompressor?, the most I've ever managed on a motorway trip is 25 MPG which I thought was good, so over 30 in a heavier bigger car is great.

Its a 2002 S55 with the bullet proof non Kompressor engine

That's very impressive. The best I've seen in the SLK on the motorway is 26 MPG, so to get 30 out of an S class is going some.

Cheers,

Gaz

My best motorway MPG has been 34 MPG -from cars under ...1600cc :(
I doubt i would get 30.4 MPG in a S320CDi!

How come?

I get around 40 over a month, mainly motorway and 4000 miles.

I have had 30.2mpg in my cl55amg (non kompressor) driving 50mph at 1am down the a14, just to see what it could do. Ill try and dig out the pic..

I will however never do that again in my life!

Often see 28/29 mpg round M25/M3/M4 excursions - but 18 or 19 is all I see round West London

Really 30+ means your not having enough fun or your being mean which is odd as you bought a 5 1/2 ltr engined car rather than a Prius :D:D:D

Probably because my longest single journey is less than 4 miles - and i have lots of single journeys less than that.- done it for nearly 20 years - and it murders MPG!
Rare motorway journeys always see better MPG
And very few of those single journeys are in heavy rush hour gridlock

Yep - certainly possible to get just over 30mpg out of the non-Kompressor '55s on a motorway cruise. At speed they are turning over so few revs and they are using very little fuel.

I'd need to check, but 70mph was less than 2000 RPM, IIRC :)

from my 208 CLK 55:

Lets kill the myth of big cars sucking petrol!!!!!
Great proof on that s55.
It's funny people ask me what is the engine size-4.2 and they go oh my good you need to spend fortune on petrol.........lol
If it is not a V8 it's not a car :)

That is brilliant.
I think that the great fuel consumption is one of the unsung features of many Mercedes cars.
Here's one of my better ones from the clk320 - note the average speed.

That's pretty impressive - I've seen mine (5.0 V8) in the 27-28mpg range but never over 30.

The newr 5.5 V8 in the facelift E's and CLS is better - my mate can see over 30 in his 2007 CLS

This is my best so far according to the instrument cluster...

Impressive. I don't think I have managed to get that from my C32.
