Hi guys,
The automatic gearbox in my 2014 A class W176, is leaking and I want to replace it. I have found a gearbox with the same part number. Question is, if I swap the gearbox will it work or it'll require coding? Please help, thanks.

A replacement transmission shouldn't need coding providing you have exactly the same Part # (eg 724.003)
Are you sure getting a replacement gearbox of unknown condition is cheaper than having your existing one reconditioned?

Thank you for the reply, I'm very pleased!
Mine is beginning to vibrate badly, though it still shifts as smooth as new. I got a low mileage replacement very cheap in perfect condition from a mates breaker.

If you have a good diagnostic scanner like a Topdon 800 you can after the box is fitted use the auto box relearn ,but as long as the numbers are the same you should not have any trouble.

I have a good scanner. Thank you so much, I appreciate the info. I'll report back once it's done by next week. 😊

If it's vibrating badly, have you checked the transmission mounting?
Actually I haven't, checked that! The box was low on oil at some point due to crack in the case, which has been repaired using steel epoxy, I don't mind using it as it is but I have to to sell it.
I will check the gearbox mount for sure!

You are going to change the 'box on a car your are going to sell?
Is that financially sensible?

I had a good deal for a gearbox That's why. I still have a few months before I sell. They are not expensive at all, I can replace myself at a friend garage.

I would not sell a car with a cracked gbox. Wouldn't sit well.
Same box wont need coding. Maybe a oil service when all bolted up.

Same, it works perfectly. Except that oil level drop after about 3k miles, going up or down hill doesn't work. So I have to add about half a litre, I've lived with it for 2 years. I think it's time to change it. I might decide to keep it for a bit longer as it's a lovely car. It's a 2014 Red A180D, AMG Sport with Night pack. 55k miles.

one of those jobs that left unattended will only get worse. if you replace the box will be good as gold. MB boxes are bomb proof (unless you somehow cracked yours).

Yeah, I'm quite surprised how resilient the gearbox is. And to make it worse I've been using the wrong cheap gearbox oil. Obviously the repair was meant to be temporarily, I know that I'll definitely change the box. I'm surprised how much it's held up. Mine suffered from an undercarriage damage.
