Cla200 724 transmission swap

Once you take big circlip off and take clutch cover off and whole clutch pack comes out in one unit. Here's picture for a better view
Thanks very much kind sir.
Will be removing gearbox on weekend and so will let you know how it goes.

No problem, it is a big job though so take your time to remember how everything goes
Sorry buddy can you put me out of my misery and tell me 1 if there is a subframe on this model car that I must remove to get gearbox out?
2 do I need to shim new clutch once fitted?
Thanks again

Yeah subframe needs to come out along with drive shafts, and you are supposed to measure the height of the new one to determine if it needs shims but last few ive done didn't need it

Thanks buddy was hoping you was going to say no to subframe ha. Not going to see until weekend. Should be fun then as I’ll be doing it on drive.

As for measuring the height of the new one… would I just put them side by side on flat surface and measure height or do I have to pull on the shaft with circlip in place and measure the play with feeler guage and then match same space with the new one with shims? Bearing in mind the new one will be coming from main dealer.
Thanks

hi again, ive tried to attach working instructions but it wont let me. If you give me your email address i'll forward them to you

Managed to find measurement instructions but seems a bit too much for me and so do you think it would be safe enough to just use the same shim that I remove from old clutch ? Thanks buddy

Ive sent you working instructions and this measuring document too. Like I said last few ive done didnt need shimming so I've reused the old one.

Thanks buddy. Think I’ll definitely be trying the old one. Will measure the play in the shaft on old one then compare the new one with old shim.

Finally got my head around hi to measure dimension A and dimension B without the tools shown … but cannot get WHERE to measure on dimension C .
I will be using parallel gauge as in picture, will just have to figure how to measure dimension C.
But only if I need to.
Can you remember if there should be any play at all in shaft after fitting cover plate? Or very minimal play?
Thanks for your help.

Thats the wrong kind of vernier to use by the way and those measurements are only relevant if you're using those mercedes special tools as part of the process. I've just measured height of the spline snout to the top of thrust bearing of the new clutch unit and compared it with old one. And measure height difference between contact surface of the new cover and thrust bearing contact surface of the cover and compared it to old one. Otherwise you'll be going round and round in circles if you haven't got those special tools.

And measure height difference between contact surface of the new cover and thrust bearing contact surface of the cover
Sorry for being a thicko.
I understand the first point to measure but am I right with the second point to measure in picture?
Thanks

Yes correct
Hi Oleks, just an update.. removed gearbox and suspicion confirmed. All the teeth on the flywheel are non existent (added pictures) and so considering my brother has decided not to keep the car we are considering replacing just the flywheel. I know it’s best practice to change clutch also while gearbox removed but I’m thinking that it was only the flywheel that failed and that there is probably nothing wrong with the clutch. What’s your opinion on this buddy? Can we get away with just a flywheel? Thanks

That all depends on the splines on the clutch as you might have issue getting the gearbox in if the splines are knackered. I usually replace both as a reliable repair.

Thanks buddy splines on clutch seem okay but I’m unsure if they should be pointed or flat as in pictures? If they should be pointed then I will have to replace clutch also. What do you think about the condition of splines?

I'd say they're quite bad and you'll probably have issues getting that into new flywheel. I personally wouldn't risk it
