Finaly got my air con sorted today after having all but 40 pound conned out of me by a "a c specialist"

My car was only topped up and it wasnt recharged as I later learned that it should have been

Anyway I took it to Kwik Fit and the friendly manager used a temp sensor to test the temp at the vents with the AC on full.
The temp was 7.9 C he said that wasnt to bad. He then said they would recharge it,test for leaks, oil the compressor etc and if it wasnt cooler by at least 2 C then they wouldnt charge me

They hooked it up to this machine for an hour and then I was called over to the car and his temp sensor he held at the vent was now reading 2.3 C !!! :)

I was given a full print out that showed all measurements of what and how much was put in and lots of other details

I was more than happy to hand over £44

I was also very impressed with their attitude they seemed very interested and enthusiastic

result :) well done. Remember and change your pollen filter if youve not done so already as this will vastly increce your airflow in the cabin.

I have changed the pollen filter's a few weeks ago Shall I also change the charcoal filter will that effect air flow ?

If you consider Halfrauds charge £37 for a "bugger it up yourself" recharge kit represents an absolute bargin

KwikFit do this for £25 with an MoT.

not sure :) ive never had a car long enough to think about changing the charcoal filter.

i had mine done last week too, only had 2 ml oil left in it, so they put in a reccomended 12ml, ice cold now, the machines they use also pressure test for major leaks.

Not strictly true, 2 ml of oil came out with the gas, I am not a fan of adding oil to a system for various reasons I have stated before, the C class actually has the following:

compressor depending on type 120/150ml of oil, condenser 20ml, evaporator 40ml, line (general) 10ml, receiver/drier 10ml and when draining the compressor add the amount drained +10ml.

I am sitting back sniggering after hearing all of the wonderful things about Kwik Fit, what you guys dont realise is that the guys are not trained in car ac, the company buys a machine from a manufacturer who then offer a mornings training on how to use it to remove and add gas and generally bluff their way through, if it is not in their manual which they keep nipping back into the office to check they are stumped, they then have an emergency number to contact (the supplier of the machine).

And last but not least dont forget that there is not just one or two types of oil for a compressor or system, do they keep them all in stock and advise you accordingly.

I must add that I rarely touch car ac these days as my other refrigeration work keeps me very busy but friends of mine in the trade are feeling the pinch now that Kwik Fit are "dabbling", I know who I wouldnt trust.

Correcting your comment.

Abit late of a reply but had to comment. all kwik-fit employees carry out a 5 day intensive training course which covers all aspects of vehicle air-conditioning with specific attention to detail. I can assure you the employees are highle trained and know exactly what they are doing. Kwikfit apparently are quite strict on training regimes and are 2nd to none when training is involved.

Which one is it then, they are trained or they are not you have put both !

Wow, that's some gap of nearly 5 years.

Working their way through the internet, slowly..

Does the training include what to do when the machines database doesnt list a newish car? Doesnt seem the employees at my local branch were shown what to do as instead of entering the figures manually from the sticker in the engine bay, they choose the previous generation model of car instead and when shown that the amount of gas and oil indicated on the print out from the machine was incorrect they refused to do it again properly with the correct values.

The car next to mine which had also come for an air-con recharge and system cleanse was having the cleaning process done and the 'mechanic' had locked the key in the car. Car was on engine running. The owner had left the car there and wasnt around. So out came various tools starting with a screwdriver going upto a crowbar to bend the door out and try and open the lock. After about half an hour they gave up and done what they should have done first i.e. called a professional with the correct tools to open the car. This company were only across the road. Sure I still have the pictures I took on my mobile.

Highly trained indeed at something, wouldnt say at air con myself.

Wow, just thanked a post that's nearly five years old! I blame Kwik-Fit:eek:

Kwikfit new member is a mole but not very good one as he lists his car as an astra, unless its a double bluff. The only concern is his time machine might run out of gas and will have to be recharged.
