Called in to see Olly at PCS today. Work took me down to the South Coast and I had some time to spare this afternoon, having previously arranged to call in tomorrow. I wanted Olly's opinion on a suspension noise (at least I thought it was a suspension noise!) and to check the brakes and pads for me.

The CLK55 was put up on the ramp and Olly checked out the suspension, all seemed to be OK. He did spot a number of heavily corroded exhaust bolts though, some rusted away almost completely, these need addressing soonest. Was also converted to having some braided brake pipes to sharpen the brakes a little. The brake pads and discs are all fairly new, which is good to know, in fact I am very relieved this is not an imminent expense! When Olly drove the '55 he checked the gearbox by flooring it from low speed ( I haven't yet got the bottle to do that!). G'box is fine I am pleased to know. The suspension knock is not coming from the suspension at all, it is possibly something loose in the headlining, or maybe a slight knocking caused by the flexing of the chassis when going over bumps. It is nothing mechanical and nothing major which is good I suppose. Shows my complete lack of mechanical knowledge!!

I have learnt that the cr&p tyres (Maragonis ?$*&??)I have on the CLK55 do nothing for road noise and probably add to a little bit of a vibration which upsets the balance of the car. It looks like a new set of rubber is required soonest.... I am now searching for some Michelin PS2s at a reasonable price or I may decide to go with slightly cheaper Pirelli's or Continentals.

It was a pleasure meeting Olly, a great bloke, great advice and a great business. I will certainly be taking my AMG there for the work that is required. The workshop looked even better with an R Class 'Mercedes Assistance' car parked outside.

Cheers Olly.

Costco are consistantly the cheapest for anything Michelin.

Peter ,

Any reason you don't want to try the Falken 452's ?

Got them on mine and Andy K has them on the back of his E55 , they are a great tyre i must say. Loads of grip , car handles beautifully.

£69 each for the rears from Camskill , £65 for the fronts ( assuming you have the same wheels as me ) ..

What is the road noise like with the Falkens Howard?

With a performance car such as yours, I would ALWAYS go for the same make as originally fitted in the current guise.
My cars original tyres were Continental. Had 4 new ones fitted earlier this year. Best price I got was from these people.......

Undercut Kwikfit by over £250.

Don't need to worry about all that.

Andys has the same power as yours ( probably more , because its been fiddled with ) , i was put onto them by the Jap forums , who run big power ( bigger than ours ) and they love them. If they are happy to put them on 3 second to sixty , 200mph Skylines , i'm happy to put them on mine , and as we know , the jap boys are big on handling ,so they aren't for burnouts only.

They are a very well rated tyre. Not noisy at all , and supremely grippy without wearing too quickly. Certainly not like any budget tyre.

I think you'll be pleasantly surprised by them. IMo they are a better tyre than the P Zero Rossos i have on the front of the car. When they wear out , they'll be getting replaced with 452's .

Good prices including mobile fitting, did you have your fitted using their mobile service?

As long as you get decent tyres it will be fine; you dont need to stick with whatever MB put on it to start with - they did not deisgn the car around Contis - it is more likley that the buying dept at MB had the last say on choice of tyre supplier from a selected list of premium brands.

and my 7 series. I rate the tyres - although mine seem to cost a bit more for some reason.

Falkens are the budget arm of Continental or Yokahama i believe and i have only heard good things about them.

Yes. The guy was very good and quick. All properly balanced, new valves etc. Took care of the rims and they remain unmarked.
Very happy and would use again without hesitation.

I have just fitted 452's to the W221 S-Class. Very pleased with them, very quite.

I had Continental Contact 2's on when i picked it up from the factory and i did get 20,000 miles from the rear and i would have got over 20,000 from the front (which i thought was very good) if Westminster Council had repaired the pothole i went down in Chelsea, put the tracking out.

So i thought i would give them a go as i have heard very good reports.

Olly, i'm going to knit you a special cape with a big 'S' on it, and you have to wear it while your working your magic on my car! (And you have to let me take pictures!) :D

Thanks for the commentsd and advice, will look into Falkens and see what the price difference is with something like Contis.

as all the others have said, the 452s are a very good tyre - a lot better than I expected :)

Mine were £120 each for the rears (265/35/18)
