The C43/55 that I 'nearly' bought.

I did a hpi check after I paid a deposit on this car and it came back as a Cat-D write-off. The seller played dumb and I accepted his naivety and got my deposit back.

Sadly it seems as though he might not be as naive as I first thought...

A scratch down the side could result in a Cat D write off.

If the car is otherwise sound I wouldn't worry too much about it. How many cars have had (probably worse) bashes that the owner has fixed themselves without reporting ?

I agree about cars not registered that have been bumped, but he knows that it's been written off and he's not declaring it.

Would you do that, not declare if a car has been written-off when you know full well that it has?

Doesn't it make it a bit pricey though now it's a cat d?

Not that pricey really, there was a straight C43/55 in similar condition that was on eBay for quite a while and it was bid up to just shy of £4k, so it's probably worth a grand less than what he's asking for it.

I don't think it does. As mentioned by Neilrr, a Cat D could very well be nothing and considering it's fourteen years old (& this is a sub 4K machine) with a transplant I think it's priced about right as it's condition that counts here rather than history imo.

I would if I could but I can't!

It's a bit immoral and sad that someone is likely to buy blind and not spend a couple of quid hpi'ing it.

I don't know why he doesn't mention it as I doubt it'll effect the price massively and anyone who is in the market for one of these knows how minor a cat d can be on older cars.

My comment was in reply to Marty359's comment on the advertised price/best offer.

As to your question, yes of course I'd declare it.

Cat D wouldn't put me off at that sort of price as long as the repairs were done well. 2 panels and a respray would write that off.

Why all are so paranoid about cat d etc?
Every else where in Europe there is nothing like it
Most cars in Uk are not declared anyways being repaired not through insurance
My mates 58 plate audi a8 was hit in a car park, driver run away.Car has 50k on the clock, repaired privately now, what is the car now -salvage?
If the car is repaired to good standard I don't see a problem

The issue isn't the fact that it's a cat D, it's that he is being deceptive.

Every car seller (& buyer) is deceptive. It's the nature of the game.

The car stands or falls on it's own merits & the character of the seller (or buyer) doesn't change the car.

The car is what the car is whether the s or b is a sinner or a saint.

The reply to my question ....

Hello there I have no hpi paperwork but I have been told recently by someone on here that it is perhaps a cat D however I can't confirm this, feel free to make your own check though

Yes , two panels and paint would cat d it , but so would driving heading into a wall at 50 mph

Remind me never to buy a car from you.

Cat C and Cat D might as well be the same classification because I've seen Cat D cars that look like an elephant has sat on them and then I've seen Cat C's with very very light damage.

To be fair to him, at least he's not denying it.

I'll take a screen grab of the hpi report and post it up later when I get home.

Speak for yourself.

When buying cars through this forum, no-one that I've dealt with has been deceptive.
