The Carbon itch...

Wow, Rash they look amazing :) love the black engine cover too suits the intakes very much - is that cover going to stand up to the intense heat and won't crack up?

Hey dude!

Hope you are well :thumb:

Thanks for your kind words. Much appreciated bud.

I had the engine cover sprayed at a good, reputable bodyshop about a year ago. It's been sitting indoors waiting for the time when it would be used for this purpose.

It would have been on the car sooner, but when the last Renntech intakes didn't work out, it couldn't be used yet.

Me and Steve joked that the paint must be well and truly cured! lol

Anyway, when I had it sprayed, I did put this question to the guy doing the paintwork. I explained that it was obviously an engine cover and would be subjected to high temps.

He assured me that the paint he would use would be up to the job.

But in truth, only time will tell.

I'll just have to keep an eye on it and see how it goes.

Worst case scenario, I'll just have to get it re-done.

It's a spare, so no biggie.

Looks very nice! Good work

(Still don't quiet understand how it works :) )

Coming to Jays Sunday Rash?

Hey Karl :thumb:

Thanks bud, I'm happy you approve.
See... I didn't Barry-up the car, eh! :D lol

Have faith, brother

Was alittle more work to fit than I expected but it all came good. :thumb:

I'll get the car dyno'd next week and see what my new exhaust and intakes are saying.

Don't think I'm going to be able to make Jay's on Sunday bud :(

Looks great mate

63's have too much silver under the bonnet and that carbon airbox has broken that up nicely.

Can never understand why Renntech never supply's a Carbon Fibre front part to match  same on the C43 airbox, like half a job :(

Hey Justin :thumb:

Thanks for your kind words bud :thumb:

As for Renntech not supplying an engine cover in CF - yep, totally agree.
It would have sold very well.
Can't work out why they didn't bother :dk:

You want to hear something weird and confusing and gobsmacking??....

Last year, I asked George at Renntech if it was possible for them to wrap my spare engine cover in CF to match their intakes.

This is a copy and paste of the communication between me and George....

Subject: Wrapping engine cover in carbon fibre

Hi George,

I was thinking about the stock engine cover for my M156 engine.

I was thinking it would really look great if it was wrapped in carbon fibre.

Renntech carbon fibre is the only carbon fibre that does not turn yellow, like other carbon fibre products. I'm thinking this is down to the quality of the clear coat you use.

Would you guys consider wrapping my engine cover if I sent it over to you?

Just a thought, that's all.

Kind Regards,

Rash "

This was George's reply.....

Hi Rash

I don't know if the process works or understand what you are trying to achieve,.

We can not cover the OEM part with REAL Carbon Fiber ! a mold has to made, plus tooling
and sent out for production (approximately $30.000 for mold and tooling)

I only wanted the thing wrapped but he seemed clueless as to what I meant?!:confused::confused::doh::doh::doh:

30k? I would have had two...,

As to what you were trying to achieve? Is that why the intakes were shyate quality and unable to fit within a mile of the Mercedes spec?

Rash, that guy ain't on this planet  You can wrap most things with real carbon fibre as long as you have the right adhesive. My C43 parts were all wrapped in real carbon and look OEM mate

Can't believe that the front cover in Carbon Fibre is not part of the kit

Lol, hey Simon :thumb:

Yes, their last intakes were indeed miles away from fitting.

It's funny, I pointed out the particular errors in the design of their last intakes to George. He made various excuses and, in the end, said that they accidentally sent me the prototype! yeah, I believe you! Lol

Then they started making these Version3 intakes and they seemed to have address the things I mentioned. I really can't believe that it took someone like me to provide 1st hand feedback for them to pick up on the design flaws.... surely? :fail

As for wrapping, I thought my request was petty clear?? :dk:

Hope to see you soon, Simon.

I may have a word with you about your guy. Sending my spare engine cover to them to wrap is very appealing...

They probably sell most of their carbon products to Americans...

Met a few guys at bluewater tonight. It was good to get the car out.

It's the first run since installing the intakes.

Car felt good and there were no issues.

The engine also felt more free-running if that makes since. Pulling in gears felt more effortless. I wasn't chaining it at all, it was a gentle cruise there and it was the same on the way back but it certainly seemed very happy.

I just wanted to cruise and let the car get used to having the new intakes on, just to make sure the car was happy with them.

Feels good so far. :thumb:

Got back and wiped the car and wheels down. I'll finish cleaning it in the morning.

I also popped the bonnet just to check everything was in order.

The painted engine cover is all good. No sign of heat effects which is great news!

Here's an interesting thing to note.. I felt the temperature of the carbon fibre intakes and compared this temperature with the engine cover, which is make of the same plastic as the stock air boxes.

The carbon fibre was less than half the temperature of the engine cover. At least! :thumb:

So it seems that these carbon fibre intakes do actually regulate intake air more than the stock ones.

This pleased me.

What you are feeling is the cold air inside the intake, regulating the outside temperature. The carbon will transfer more heat into the intake air.

Hey Will :thumb:

Yeah, I hear you.

But surely if the original air boxes were roasting hot after a run, it would heat the air in the air boxes more?

More likely, if the touch temperature was greater, the plastic was acting as an insulator, the carbon as a conductor.

Only testing would prove this.

I noticed the same Rash, (I fitted the Carbinio which fitted really well......just hope it doesnt turn yellow).
Performance wise i was running the standard V4 tune up until the MSL day. After Jerry fine tuned it with the Carbinio on (I bought it from Jerry) it just seemed to pull much smoother. On the day it dynoed at 536bhp (Just a standard C63).

One things for sure the renntech setup looks sweet.
