The Difference Between A C43 And A C36 AMG

Just thought I'd share my experiences of owning both a C43 and C36 AMG for those that are thinking about buying one (and for those that are generally just interested. :)

As most of you know, I've been restoring a C36 and also bought a C43 in the meantime.

First point, exterior looks;
Obviously not a great difference, but I much prefer the kit on the C36. The exhaust pipes are square and tuck up nicely to the bumper, whereas the pipes on the C43 protrude too far out which makes them look a bit odd.

Next, interior;
With my C36 being a very early example, I can see the W201 influence, whereas when you sit in the C43 it really feels that bit more up-to-date. The two-tone in the '43 is very nice, very much 'of the '90's'. Having said all of that, they are essentially the same car, so again, no major differences.

Now for the important bit, how they drive;
The C36 is four-speed and the C43 a five-speed, which means that the '36 is always champing at the bit to hustle, whereas the '43 is a bit more lazy; they really are very different cars in this respect. I love it when the variable valve timing kicks in on the '36, it's such a keen engine, yet I think the V8 '43 is simply about foot-down-in-a-straight-line grunt (I can certainly the way that Mercedes were trying to take their AMG line when they released the '43). Both are not particularly blessd round the bends, stiff enough, but unless I could put a manual gearbox in either I wouldn't bother taking them to a track. If I was to take one, it'd be the '36. The '43 has 18" Monoblocks on which I will change back to standard 17s, the steering feel is woeful compared to the 17" wheeled '36.

To finish, the sound;
Not quite a fair comparison because the C43 has had a de-cat, but the sound of this V8 when you start her up is something to behold and if you don't grin when you do, then what are you doing on a car forum! (only joking :D) The C36 is how I'd imagined an old-school, last of the proper AMG's to be; quiet when pootling around town but turns into a snarling beast when you give it some stick, the '43 is definitely more 'shouty' and 'move out of my way, I'm driving a V8 here, don't ya know' pretty much all of the time.

In summary then, if you want something 'look at me and hear my engine roar' type of car, get the C43. If you want one of the best sleepers, where not many people will know what you're driving until you've flown past them; buy a C36.

My favourite? Probably because we've been through so much together; the C36.

C36. That'll do nicely.

I wonder down the line which one Lee will sell. Or will he keep the 36 and upgrade the 43 to a 55.

Good simple write up/comparison, thanks for sharing. Now anyone with W203 C32 and C55 AMG that can do the same ??:rock:

Oddly enough, it'll be the C36 more than likely, although someone has already offered to buy the C43 off me just for the exhaust sound alone!

If I remember correct, search for forum member 'AlanD'. He was in a very similar scenario to you and ended up going for a C55.

After having both also I must say the c36 is the one I would choose also I like the engine note when driven on and feels quicker off the mark

I miss my old c36 I wonder we're she is now I would buy it back in a second

Thanks for the review

He sold it too a guy in Killarney co Kerry Ireland

But I haven't be able to find it

The guy that bought it off me was a dreamer
He has bought four big engines cars since and sells them all after a week or two saying he has done all this work too them him self and saying they have way more bhp then they have and so on

I should have never sold it I should have stored it like others I have
A well live and learn

I'm away in Norway working at moment I might sort a stop over in England and buy one drive her home

You have me thinking now ??????

My pleasure. :thumb:

I've got a feeling that I'll regret selling the C36, but there is no point in having two of these when I'm struggling for space slightly and I'm intending to put a '55 lump in the '43 as well.

Both cars are getting very rare now days and the ones I can see for sale all seem tired... so don’t rush and wait for the right one to come along.

I've had both and I’d honestly say the c55 is a better car, more reliable and quicker not much in it though.
A healthy c32 can hit 0-60 in 4.6secs but finding a decent one is very hard, they are all high miles and tired, people don’t look after them properly.…

I’d pay extra ££ for one that is been looked after properly…

C55 +

Handles better/drives better
Sounds nicer (c32 still sounds great)
More reliable
Paddle shifts on the steering
Better build quality
Bespoke styling

C55 -

Mainly running cost.

Lack of LSD, (has an electronic thing, which mimics a LSD and its rubbish!
Rear tyres don’t last that long
Mpg isn’t great, c32 is slightly better.
It’s an AMG so everything is double the price..

I would choose an E46 M3 over a C32 but a C55 over both!

I wonder if your comparision would be any different if your 36 had the 5 speed box, fitted like the later 36's did.
Have to agree about your comments about the body kits, as I too prefer the 36 one, the 43 kit looks a bit chunky in comparision, making the 36 look more agile, though I think the 36 kit looks more dated than the 43 one.

The straight six c36 just feels quicker on take off

Slight thread-jack Lee with question I meant to ask ages back. It relates to how a Mercedes drives - your W123! The easiest way to answer my question is to name anything else you've driven that drove like it - if anything?

It'd also be good to drive them both with the 4-speed! :D

I'm not really trying to say that the C36 is 'better', it's just that they're quite different cars and if I'd not been through such drama trying to get the C36 right, then I would have possibly preferred the '43.

Both are such cracking cars in their own way. :thumb:

Pretty much a stereotypical Mercedes of that bygone era; the little four pot engine was quite sprightly for the age of the car, the suspension smooth (or soft as some may describe), the steering wheel was like that of a ships such was the size of it, it averaged about 25mpg and I felt like Colonel Gaddafi's chauffeur driving it, all it needed was some little flags on the ends of the wings! (my wife actually only referred to it as the Gaddafi-mobile after I mentioned what I felt like driving it)

C43 Kit makes the boxy W202 look mean and muscle car like, where as the C36 just looks, well, old IMO...

The W202 is around twenty year old though and was probably designed in the late eighties.

My gripe with the C43 kit is more to do with the tail pipes sticking too far out so they look a bit 'aftermarket'. :ban:

I'm looking at getting it shortened slightly, if it's at all possible.

They don't come like that from factory, it's sticking out because of the De-cat.

Even on the C55's I’ve seen with De-cats the 4-pipes are sticking out way too much compared to mine which are nicely tucked as I haven’t played around with the exhaust system.

Is there anything newer thatgoes down the road like a W123? How does the Discovery feel in comparison?
