I have moved one step beyond the darker side but we love it and because my RUST free 210 has a F/Fit tow bar and self levelling suspension I have purchased this and a awning and will be trawling the motorways regularly

Dont you mean 'Oh dear another slow moving, congestion causing, huge object obscuring my safe vision of the road around me and likely to do a stupid manouvere because he/she cant see whats behind'

I think users of caravans should pay more rund fund licence than those who dont. After all they occupy more than double the space of a normal vehicle and cause untold congestion and disruption to everyone else! I think I'll suggest that one to Prudence Brown!

Good lad well done.......I love my van and I'm out most weekends in summer......use the countryside as your garden dear boy........except dont mow it, buid an extension or hang your washing out wearing only yer duds

hmmm...the 2 caravanners in this thread are both Mancs....I'm worried I'll succumb

Although not a Manc I have a caravan ... but with 202 bhp in my Sharan 4Motion (I don't tow with the R129 ;) ) it doesn't hang about. In fact there's a Porsche 911 driver in the Reading area who should hang his head in shame after I overtook him on a single carriageway road last year with the caravan on the back (he'd been holding me up for miles)! :D

My personal hate 'mobile roadblock' is the horse box ... typically a converted 1970s HGV driven by a blue rinsed old bat who slows to a walking pace for every gentle bend (don't want Neddy in the back being thrown about), then takes 10 mins to accelerate back up to the top speed of 40 mph.

As a frequent user of the A303/A30 have somewhat less charitable view of Caravans, especially when towed by small, clapped out vehicles loaded to capacity or as often is the case just driven by someone who obviously has no idea.

I really do think that in order to tow anything larger than a small trailer some form of testing should be required and minimum power/weight ratios enforced.

And yes, even worse, the Horsebox!! Now I know that dobbin is both heavy and cannot be thrown around so care is required, but some of the sights we see are simply beyond belief. Top prize this year goes to huge double horsebox, laden with beasts and towed by an ancient diesel SWB Landy that would struggle to get to 65mph unladen downhill with a following wind. When I eventually got past on a uphill stretch from the noise the engine was making versus speed he had to be in one of the low ratios!

Question: Could it be said that all caravaners were all snails in a previous life, as they carry their homes around with them, and also move v e r y s l o w l y.

Yup I guess it depends where you live/drive ... anything big & slow in front of you is a real pain!

You'd have been in the poo in a big way if he'd seen he was about to be overtaken by a caravan and kept you out there ..... ;)

When i see a caravan in front of me , Captain Picard usually appears on my shoulder shouting ' Warp 9 .... Engage ! ' :D

like the caravan what is it i have a sterling vitesse 520 good first time van only 1300kg so gives me 68% towing ratio.with a nose weight of 76kg.I can go up to 1600kg which will put me in the twin axel department something like a Fleetwood heritage although are heavy vans around 1760 max I would be around 91% not illegal but boarder line may have to get a 4x4 as well may be a ML :)

what do you use to tow

My best caravan story was: -

I was in two lanes of stopped traffic on a bend with single track the other way. We were moving slowly and people were getting impatient. In the outside lane was a Granada with a caravan attached. Suddenly ahead someone had stalled and the outside lane stopped, and there was a gap up in front beyond the breakdown. A Jaguar behind us decided to overtake the out side lane, but the Granada also decided to have a go. He had forgotten however that he had the caravan and he pulled out in front of the jaguar and forced him into the offside kerb with the caravan which came out in front of him. There was a terrible screach of brakes from the jaguar, and fortunately he missed the caravan "just". They stopped to exchange words, but the granada driver was red faced and the jaguar driver was not amused at all. :D :D

He just knew he was outclassed and gave in gracefully ;)

Didn't apply in this case, but it's really annoying when people pull out of a side turning when they see a caravan coming ... forcing me to slam on the brakes, and then driving far slower than I was in the first place! On single carriageway roads you do need a good clear stretch to get past them.

Of course this would be an even better towcar for upsetting Porsches:
