The pitfalls of not repairing potholes

Poor roads drive me mad; just been around Bedfordshire/Milton Keynes today, pot holes are atrocious. I think Beds CC has a road repair budget of about £10 a year

I buckled an alloy on my old S13 200SX a few years ago.

Was very annoyed, it was absolutely huge and full of water so didn't realise it was that deep until I drove through it.

Put my tracking out too.

Wrote then a letter, got no compensation but to be fair they did repair the road within days.

got no compensation

Unless the hole was only made recently, don't they have a duty of care that would allow you to claim for compensation?

Where is Swiss Toni when you need him? :D

Has to be a big hole () and the council has to show it hasn't recently inspected the road. If they have you may not be able to claim; they (authority highway inspectors) keep inspection records that the insurance section of the authority will refer to. Not all claims are valid don't y'know ;)

With the heavy rain we've had recently pot holes spring up at an alarming rate. It's amazing how quickly the water can find weaknesses and erode the surface.

Which is why buying 4x4s for town is in fact a good idea. I feel so clever now. Secretly, Ken wants one, but knows he cannot. Damned principles.

How do you know he hasn't got one, driving it incognito with a fake tache, dark glasses and a funny hat? :D

Ahh that's him is it? I shall flash him in future....lights MBManInKen....lights I say:D

Hang on! That post suggests Ken Livingstone has principles. I respectfully beg to differ!!

Some of the B roads round my way were a mess after the first frost last winter. Full of pot holes with debris spread over the road. I actually buckled 2 wheels on a works vehicle and damaged one of the tyres as the potholes were hidden beneath large puddles. The road has obvious drainage problems and needs to be rebuilt completely.

The council filled in the potholes and resurfaced by spraying with tar and spreading stone chips last spring. Come the first frost this year, the pot holes are everywhere, puddles everywhere and debris spread across the road.

I suppose they will come and do the same as last year, again & again, instead of fixing the root of the problem. The roads & drainage are beyond there useful life. To be honest, the local gypsies could lay driveways better than this and for less money.

I drive through a fairly large set of roadworks on a regular basis - probably a two year programme in all.

Right in the middle there's a really rough patch on a T-junction literally pot hole beside pot hole - it's like an exercise developed to show off the suspension travel on an off-roader.

Over last three weeks it's quickly got worse. My only conclusion is that they were holding fire because it's only a matter of time before the new road layout will mean relaying that surface.

I guess somebody made a claim, as the whole junction was resurfaced this week.

Unfortunately there are other patches along the same stretch which are almost as bad, but are as yet un touched.

Should never have been allowed to get so bad.

Probably worried he'd get caught over the limit. 10AM whiskies will do that....

Does anyone know the exact amount of revenue that the government uses from road taxes, that they put back into roads etc?

The roads in the UK are one of the most poorly maintained in Europe.

Couldn't agree more. I drove in Northern Cyprus around some pretty poor areas. I thought some of the buildings were derelict, but people were living there. The roads were like driving on glass - SO smooth.

... and yet we have one of the highest road taxes
