The R Class Launch today

interesting that it is being built on the M class platform - are they sure it's not really being built on the Nissan Murano line - they don't half look alike :)

:D Certainly a long way to go to collect the car and have a tour round the factory. ;)

Wouldn't much like the drive home either.

I hope I am not talking myself into disliking this model?

The second picture looks to me like its related to the PT Cruiser  - but the first picture I think is worse.

The way the roof meets the tailgate is ugly - looks like they made the pillar too short and then pulled it down to fit.

I see it as an echo of the back of the new E estate - which I have reservations about - but worse...much worse.

That's what I thought, purely in styling terms.

At least it seats 6 people, handy for the 2 + 4 kid families

Hi all,

More piccies and details of R-class: here:
Cheers,

Hi Dieter,
Thanks for posting the very interesting link. As a potential future customer I am reading good points and unfortunately bad points.

Why have a short wheelbase for the European market, and a longer wheelbase for the US. What is wrong with choice?

12 cup holders. TWELVE!!!!! That beggars believe two for each occupant?

******DaimlerChrysler AG is planning two different GSTs for European and North American predilections. The European model will be built on a shorter wheelbase but retain the same design theme. The North American GST will see few changes from the basic dimensions or style from the car shown in Detroit. With three rows of seats, the longer North American GST can accommodate up to seven passengers, while the European model offers a choice of four individual seats or a more conventional bench seat to accommodate five passengers and cavernous luggage space. Both are built on the platform of the next-generation M-Class, Mercedes' U.S.-built SUV that's set to generate three entirely different models.*************

I really like the 211 and it will need something special to convince me to change.

John

I think the more I look at the R-class, the more I dislike that rear quarter window. It slopes far too much for my very own taste and could well be a major turn off.

Last week we received an invite to go to Thruxton for the day to play with a Porsche Cayanne, yesterday I receiverd an invite to play with the new Audi A6 Avante. Has anyone read any reviews of the Audi A6 V8 diesel powered machine.

I am typing this message whilst 'she that must be obeyed' is out. :o  :D

Regards,
John

on the whole i like it, except for those headlights?

what on earth were they thinking? why make them 2 piece units???

I saw the R class at the New York Auto Show

It is hideous .. no proportion, no style, no class. The rear lights are the worst -- looks just like those cheap after market jobs that you see on Citroen Saxos. Just BIG. It's a tank. This car looks worse in real life than in pictures.

Interior looked nice though, but not allowed to sit in it.

The more I look at it, the more I like it (apart from the lights!!) I like the concept and I think in the right colour with the right wheels it would be great.

Will be asking local stealership for a test drive, just to see you understand!!
