Thinking of a GL to get the family about.

Not wishing to be disloyal to the brand , but since you are looking at large SUV type vehicles, have you cast your eyes across the Atlantic, since our friends over there love that type of vehicle, Lincoln Navigator , Cadillac Escalade and many others . Many of these vehicles can be had new here for surprisingly low prices.

Just a thought .
I thought of them yesterday too when there was talk of the GL being big outside and in. They’re massive - makes the GL look petite. Almost 20 feet long, over 7’ wide and tall too. Potentially a touch thirsty I reckon...

Had one in the states..... 19mpg. But I enjoyed every moment.

I’ve owned ML350 and 420 CDi and, in my experience, there wasn’t a great deal in the fuel economy on average.

Iirc the 350 did about 35mpg on a steady run whereas the 420 was 30/32 mpg and around town from cold the 350 was 23/24 mpg and the 420 20/21 mpg.

When you factor in how superior the 420 is power-wise it’s a very small price to pay and also, at times, the 350 did feel a bit lacking when pressing on or overtaking on country roads.

What about Toyotas offering?, out of the big 4x4s it will be the least likely to break down or go wrong-ever, the one most likely to not depreciate much if at all!.

Saying that, for the money you’re looking at you can get one of the face lifted L322 Range Rover 3.6 or possibly a 4.4 TDV8 now, I know Land Rovers aren’t bastions of reliability but the later L322s particularly the 4.4s has most of their issues ironed out by then, they’re more modern inside then the GL and are great value at the moment.

I had one of the last L322 TDV8's for a year. During that time it had 3 expensive trips to the dealers. In a combined 10 years of ML and GLE ownership there were none at all.
Just saying!

If 5 seats will do then the Range Rover is very tempting.

I love Land Rovers but have recently gone off the more modern ones when I discovered the crank snapping issue on the V6, the Range Rover dodges that bullet.

The least likely to throw big bills is the 4.4 TDV8 as they’re not as likely to suffer turbo problems as the 3.6, don’t snap cranks like the TDV6 and have the more robust 8 speed ZF box, although it’s a Range Rover things can and will go wrong still!.

The Landcruiser is honestly the best 4x4 I’ve ever owned or driven for reliability but admittedly it isn’t quite as refined.

I was also going to suggest a FFRR 4.4 TDV8 (5.0 SC if you’re feeling flush!), the nearest thing Mercedes make that’s vaguely as refined is the S-Class and they’re amazing value for money especially in Autobiography trim.

What's the views of the S-max MPV

Auto, 2.3 litre. The looks are ok on certain models :dk:

Had a P38 RR HSE 4.6 litre that was a lovely 4x4. The looks were dated but drove beautifully.

I have had my 2008 GL420 for about 15 months, absolutely thrilled with it, however last November I had to have a new suspension compressor and front air suspension units and rear airbags.
At least all sorted now, it is a truly great vehicle. I have other cars but really enjoy running around in this one

Massaging seats would have been nice lol.

Wow what spec that comes with very nice. The colour is a bit marmite but I do actually like it.

Looks like a fault to me .

I really like them, and the D4 too, really great value now, and so comfortable and nice to drive, if it wern't for the reliability/build quality issues I'd have another, but have to admit with the prices of the 4.4 TDV8s now I'm starting to think they're worth the risk.

D4 can snap their cranks with no warning and apparently no pattern to which ones go and which ones don’t, I would avoid them unless you’ve got big balls and a big wallet, the rest of the vehicle is good, ours was reliable save a couple glitches over 3 years and 50k, but I felt like it was a ticking time bomb rightly or wrongly

An ML420 with about 450 lb weight aboard (driver, luggage, dog, etc.) will return around 26 mpg in motorway cruising at 80-85 mph in winter. The GL is a bit heavier, so will be a bit thirstier.

I'm afraid I can't say what the 70 mph figure is.

You can buy a nice tidy 4.4 TDV8 for circa £10k now and even though my experience of LR vehicles reliability is, on the whole, better than Mercedes I can see why people are put off by their reputation - I say damn the consequences! :D

The thing with land rovers is they are so very well designed and extremely charming if that’s the word, the reliability downsides, on the whole are worth the trade off, but I draw the line at a new engine on the sdv6.

The 4.4v8 Range Rover is an absolutely brilliant car, if only I’d stopped at 2 kids, d’oh!
