Thinking of a GL to get the family about.

The thing with land rovers is they are so very well designed and extremely charming if that’s the word, the reliability downsides, on the whole are worth the trade off, but I draw the line at a new engine on the sdv6.

The 4.4v8 Range Rover is an absolutely brilliant car, if only I’d stopped at 2 kids, d’oh!
Yeah, they’ve got a way of sucking you in haven’t they?

From what I recall the V6 diesel crank issues were ironed out late 2012/early 2013 but I’m not familiar enough with them to be certain.

Happened to our neighbours 2014, and apparently happening to new cars with as low as 1000 miles on the clock according to a main dealer tech

Fuel economy for GL420/450 - lucky if you achieve 30MPG mixed motoring. Sorry, no idea about 280/320/300/350,

X5 for me is all about those rear haunches. Still think they look great in the right colour/spec. Love the fact that the new M Sport are running on 315 profile rear tyres.
Yeah they make normal cars look puny.

I'm way out of my depth when it comes to SUV's but have always liked the Volkswagen Tiguan even though it's comes across a bit bland as VW's do but I would love to test drive one.

The interior seems well laid out and solid and from most reviews seems a pretty reliable, comfortable car for the family.

D4 can snap their cranks with no warning and apparently no pattern to which ones go and which ones don’t, I would avoid them unless you’ve got big balls and a big wallet, the rest of the vehicle is good, ours was reliable save a couple glitches over 3 years and 50k, but I felt like it was a ticking time bomb rightly or wrongly

I really like them but when I next want a 4x4 I’m going to do the sensible thing again:

You can buy a nice tidy 4.4 TDV8 for circa £10k now and even though my experience of LR vehicles reliability is, on the whole, better than Mercedes I can see why people are put off by their reputation - I say damn the consequences! :D

I’ve had 3, 2 decent ones and one absolute dog, the memory is starting to fade now though.
A good friend is a trader and he says 4.4 TDV8s are going through at BCA at £8k ish!.

Wow they are really starting to look so old. Do they still have the old ladder chassis feel?

Had a Prado for 11 years from new in 2003, absolutely bombproof and that was mainly driven on poor off road conditions in Tunisia . Mind you I have a neighbour here who has a 2005 model and he has just had to replace the rear subframe.

Mates dad ran BP in Azerbaijan and he swore by the Lancruisers Amazons up to I think 2006\07. He had a procession of them as his chauffeur driven limo. The later version which is I think more a Lexus he said was awful.

19 mpUSg - that's about 15mpImpg. On the thirsty side for UK fuel prices.

I tripped over an article discussing fuel economy and fuel efficiency of USA trucks and truck derived SUVs over a decade or so. They hadn't improved their fuel economy (in mpg) but had substantially increased their fuel efficiency as they had gotten a lot more powerful and their capability re towing was streets ahead of where they once were.
Circa 250hp and 350lb.ft form a typical V8 is where Euro/Asian turbo diesels are. The V8 is a shed load simpler and less stressed though. A no-brainer for a Yank with cheap fuel at hand.

US gallons are smaller than ours ... 19 miles per US gallon is approx. 22.8 miles per UK gallon.

Yep, I got that completely **** over tit.

Depending on the driving style, knocking 23 mpg (Imperial) isn't so bad for a 'full size' SUV that weighs a bit. If that was driving with little regard for economy - all the more impressive. V6 not V8 from 2015 - with a lot more complexity.

The latest facelift ones look a bit fresher:

Their design is 10+ years old now and they were as never tech laden as a D4 in the first place, really though I’d like an 80 series one from the 90s, tough as old boots and going steadily up in value!.

I had a 2005 one and other than a sticky brake calliper I didn’t have a single issue with it.

As we have a new addition to the family he is 9 weeks old today :D.

I'm thinking a GL with 7 seats would give us that bit more room for when we take the boys football at the weekends mostly. And other family outings also.

We would be chopping in our E90 saloon 320i for a GL.

I have seen a few some have rather high mileage to which would suit our budget. Should I be put off with 100+k mileage.

Could you guys in the know give me a few tips on what to look for and what's the overall better engine variant in your opinions.

I'm in no rush but I think it's the best option for us long term.

Thanks, Tom

Haven’t driven the Tiguan , but we have a few Diesel Touaregs on the fleet at work ; very capable they are , and it seems that used ones can be had quite cheaply .

While we have had many VW and Audi cars in the family , and currently have a couple of Golfs , if I were looking for a people/load carrier , it would likely be some variant of VW Transporter ...

US miles are also different from our miles , I can’t remember by how much .

Then there are Nautical Miles .

Why does it need to be so complicated ?

At least with SI units , metres are metres , unless you take relativity into consideration , when around the speed of light ( warp 1 ) measurements of mass , time and distance cease to be constants and become variables .

It is more than 40 years since I did physics at Uni , so don’t ask me to explain further . Cobwebs of the mind ...
