This road is my road!!

I agree 19 miles of this is a little strange. After 1 mile I'd have got bored and changed my speed 5 MPH either way.

I encounter this daily and just do the above. Not worth getting bent out of shape over.

It's strange here if you don't give a response that suits all.

I also wasn't having a dig at Bruce. I was merely saying the loud pedal works both ways. If this guy in the Golf was annoying him (which he clearly was) why subject yourself and your beloved to 19 miles of t1t for tat?

Shall we all just start agreeing with every OP made to make everyone happy or give our truthful opinions? :dk:

I've said many times that I love many of Bruce's posts. They're very funny and entertaining. However, on this occasion I think he could have reduced his blood pressure & stress for his family if he'd have lost this clown either way.

To be clear here:

1) My wife daughters were upset when the golf driver pursued us from the M25/M26 merge point. A distance of around 1.5 miles.

2) I had slowed down to 50 on the inside lane of a 70 mph motorway in an effort to allow this guy to pass.

3) On the M26 I was at all times on the inside lane traveling at less than the 70mph sped limit. The golf driver has a clear road to pass me. I see from here that some suggest that you should slow down to allow other cars to pass. How odd?

4) for the nineteen miles he sat with us. We were not all bothered - just thinking it odd. It was when he refused to allow an overtake that the issue started.

The entire incident lasted around 2 miles from his trying to block my overtake. At which point (as I said) I did have to speed up.

In retrospect, I should not have posted. It seems the way of this forum to attack with no thought and no questions. My point was to highlight what I thought to be odd behaviour.

I am intrigued that some feel it is for me to change my drive to suit others who seem to want to intimidate. Maybe I should have just stopped? Done a U-Turn, not left home? Alternatively I could do what people do every day of the week and drive perfectly legally down the road.

I shall in future wait observe lots of Mercs standing on the brakes at the first suggestion of any car approaching from behind.

You're being over sensitive Bruce. Of course you need to adjust your speed according to traffic conditions. If every car on motorways used CC and refused to adjust occasionally they'd be carnage.

I do however await your next thread similar to the towel one that was fantastic. :thumb:

There will always be numpties on the road, that is a given. It's up to us to avoid them and be model defensive drivers. It doesn't have to be your fault for it to be avoidable, and in this case a slight increase or decrease in speed would have solved the problem.

I used to be really stubborn and self-righteous on the road when I though I was in the right, but over time I've realised that turning the other cheek solves a lot of problems.

I think people were just saying what they would do based on the limited information and a bit of hindsight. Not criticising, just proffering a view.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing.

You have my sympathy I come across this everyday in my line of work. People love nothing better than sitting right on the back door of the truck drafting you down the road. 19 miles is not too extreme as they are happy to sit at 56mph on the motorways quite happily these days too save a few mpg. Without a rear camera sometimes you have no idea if they are still there or not as they stick so close.

I should not have posted and wish now I hadn't.

My point was (perhaps badly made) it is odd behaviour (at the very least) to drive around like this. Were the roles reversed (no pun intended). I would:

a) Not sit on somebody's rear quarter. I assume that the outside lane is for overtaking!! So I use it for overtaking.

b) In the event that I could see that by maintaining my speed I would obviously cause another driver to take avoiding action! I would simply speed up, or slow down and indicate my intention by giving a cursory flash of the lights.

c) I would not set out to then run people off the road by slowing and moving lanes etc.

I just wondered what possible thought could have been in his head here?

No I had not cut him up earlier or jumped out his bedroom window after rogering his wife.

The conclusion I have come too? He simply wanted the argument and was going to have it whatever. On an otherwise empty road!!!

To those that advocate blatting off into the distance!!

I was driving a BMW E39. These have the same speed characteristics as a sloth in a deep sleep. Also that is not wise with Mrs M and my daughters on board. As mentioned!!! I did try slowing. He simply mimicked that effectively running me out of road. THere is no hard shoulder here (it is a SMART motorway)

Dragging him out his car. Yes absolutely. Why not. He seemed perfectly happy to run me off the road. Shaking him warmly by the hand whilst buying him a drink at the bar for doing that, does not really work for me. Only because I have an irrational dislike of being driven off the road with my wife and kids in the car.

In the words of Noddy Holder..... It's Christmas.

If a driver is being a cnut to me then I give them one chance and then right or wrong, I will be a cnut back. Simples.

I think the recognition that the other driver was a complete knob is universal.

No one sensible would drive in that manner. Whether he is just a wind up merchant, or something worse we will never know and glad that you didn't find out either.

Only thing I can think of is that he didn't have cruise control and was using your car position for that purpose. When that cosy arrangement was threatened he got annoyed. Whatever -I expect its a pattern of behaviour he repeats frequently for whatever reason - you just happened to be the subject of his attentions on this occasion.

(it is a SMART motorway)

It's going to be more and more common on SMART motorways. The multiple lanes and strict speed limits will see to that.

At most, I dare to go 3mph over the posted limit with my cruise control. However, that is often enough as many drivers won't let the speedo needle touch the line - let alone just sit on top of it.

Having moved from MB to BMW a year ago, I have noticed that the car attracts a number of idiot drivers that the MB didn't. Generally the "go" pedal turns them into dots in the mirror - but this is not an option when there are "safety" cameras about...

To be fair you're not wrong.

I did consider this as a factor. There is a massive hostility to BMW (drivers) I can't honestly say that they are worse or better than any others I see on the roads. FYI. My average annual mileage exceeds 60k mostly motorway. I don't think in this situation that counts. But those that seem to think I am wrong for being annoyed or should have taken the route out, when I was (I repeat) driving in the inside lane at less the speed limit at a fixed speed on an empty dual carriageway. I just cannot agree with that. That is to suggest that we all adapt our driving to people who simply want to have the fight.
