Thoughts and advice on this CLK55??

Looks nice. I'd buy it, on the proviso the brakes had recently been replaced. New composite rotors etc I believe might make up 25% of the asking price

Cheers Blue Moon. Excuse my ignorance but what is meant by composite rotors? Also should I be wary of the mileage or do they take the miles well?

Looks alright, little bit pricey though? it has the later (much better) dashboard but has the pre-facelift lights and grill - easy to change.

Check the rear arches for rust, although its a 04, its likely it was built in 03 so wont have gavenised body panels.

The quad exhaust modification is a great addition.

Check the mirrors fold in and out, check the rear numberplate lights work (a new rear SAM is required if they dont). Also check the 3rd brake light as they are prone to cracking & are £80 to replace.

The windows should drop 1cm when opening the doors, aswell as the rear windows. check these all work correctly otherwise you need a new door control unit.

Thanks Killer Hertz,

The seller has told me there is a little bit of surface rust on the rear arches, should it therefore be avoided? Also what sort of money am I looking at for new discs and pads all round?

What MPG would you get realistically and is it a reliable lump?

Some of the issues to look out for are :

Seat sensors .

All seat heating(top and bottom) /electrics.

Leakage of oil from rocker covers .Take it for a good solid run and push it . If there are any issues you will smell oil .

Leakage of oil from rear crank seal .

All electrics are working 100% as expensive to repair . Double and triple check them .

Noisy ventilation flaps on start up might mean on there way out .

I would strongly advise to take it to Merceeds specialist to put it on a Star system to bring up any error codes .Check derive history and call the people that serviced it and and ask a few questions ;).

As to the brakes and discs, they are very cheap of Mercedes now. I had purchased from pads for £55 ! Discs are probably £120-£150 ,so relatively speaking not too bad now .

Quad exhaust are standard on that model as its a coupe . It's on the cabriolet thAt they had only a twin on the near side due to the additional chassis bracing .

As had been previously stated ,it is a tad on the dear side ,but I know prices are starting to rise on these models now ,well on the cabriolet at least ;).

As to the MPG ,you will get 15-20mpg in the real world if you drive it easy and use cruise control .

Hope this helps and good luck.

MERCEDES-BENZ CLK55 AMG 2004 AMG PERFORMANCE PACK/QUAD EXHAUST/FACELIFT | eBay

Considering buying this. Can anybody offer me advice on what sort of things go wrong on these cars and does it appear a good car?

All the advice you can give will be appreciated..

Pre-facelift '55s never had Quad pipes (even coupes), only the very late ones did.

Those are a mod.

The seller said the passenger side heated seat doesn't work but the rest of the electrics do. Will this model have the supercharger?

Is the engine and gearbox robust or should I be wary of the mileage?

The engine and box in these are usually bomb proof (subject to the normal checks).

Ancillaries can be very expensive so worth checking especially the AC comp, alternator etc. They also do tend to be very whiny on first start but should stop after about 15 secs (that is normal). Being V8's they do like to show off the quality of the oil by leaving some on the under tray or your drive.

The heated seat is EASY to fix, the pad is £20 off eBay and it takes around an hour.

The steering wheel sensor can sometimes play up. Not sure about how much this costs to replace though, as I sold the car before it became an issue.

I also had the issue with the third brake light cracking, which cost me £150 including parts to get fixed (probably would have done it myself, but the vehicle was still in warranty, and third party fixes are/were frowned upon).

Tyres don't come cheap either. A quality rear set will set you back £200-£250. You won't want to put budget tyres on a car with that power delivery. Front tyres are slightly cheaper, and you won't wear them so quickly. I used to get through a rear set every 7,000 miles.

As for the claim of getting 30mpg, I would doubt that. I was lucky to get 32mpg on a long slow run from the South Coast to Lincolnshire, as that was in a CLK500, which is not as powerful. On average, I got between 20-25mpg, and got 17mpg if I booted it.

Thanks for the info lads.

One last point, he said that every now and then there is a rubbing/clicking noise coming from under the transmissions tunnel. He said it was some loose insulation that's come loose...

Is this a common issue or is it more serious?

Unless you can knock off a decent amount, id walk to be honest. For that price you would expect it to be virtually mint.

Plenty more around the corner.

Having a look on ebay and the trader....it seems at the low end of prices Killer Hertz?
