Tier 1 warranty expectations

I've booked my W219 CLS in to Merc Dealer to look into a strange woodpecker type noise when I unlock the doors. The mechanic came out to have a listen but couldn't pin point the cause without booking it in.

I've also asked them to look at the heated rear window which isn't demisting the top 3 bars.

I'm fully expecting the noise when unlocking to be under warranty, but would the heated rear window be covered.

Anyone know what exclusions Tier 1 has, the car was bought as approved used in Nov 2013.

Glass is an exclusion if I recall correctly.

They wouldn't replace my mirror glass where the heating elements had failed.

Its only a eight weeks out of the dealers care, I would argue abouyt the rear window demist fault as being an item that could not in all faith be checked by yourself on collection and only came to your attention when in your possession, have a moan.....assuming you didn't pay pennies for the fine beast!

Somebody helpfully advised me on this forum you can get a conductive paint to fix element problems. Never heard of it before but it does seem to exist!

If you get nowhere warranty wise might be a relatively straightforward self fix?

Is it the top-most 3 bars?? If so, on mine (E55), they not part of heater element, there's a small gap between them and the heating element. I.e. they aren't supposed to heat.

However, if yours is different, then you should be OK:

"4.1.2 What is not covered?
Claims for mechanical breakdown of covered parts
due to wear and tear will be declined if the mileage
exceeds 100,000 miles.
Bodywork, body seals (including boot, sunroof,
roof, doors etc.), fixings and fastenings: nuts/
bolts/brackets/studs/clips and springs (other than
suspension springs), glass (unless replacement is
required due to failure of electronic circuitry)
, interior/
exterior trim, paint, lamp units and wheels."

The heated rear window appears continuous. I did ask if this was part of the radio aerial but they weren't sure, it is very visible from the drivers view. My C Class had the aerial in the window but I never notices an area that didn't clear. Thanks for the transcript above, it does make it clear.

I would definitely expect a defective HRW to be covered under tier 1. I'm sure the 'glass' exemption is simply to stop people claiming for broken/cracked windscreens etc.

My experience with Tier 1 has been very good - they recently replaced the whole door mirror frame on our 7 year old C Class because it very occasionally gave a cluster error relating to the indicator (which did still work OK). A few years back they replaced the battery in my SL, which I was fully expecting to be exempted.

The dealer has identified the cause if the noise when unlocking the car as the interior sensor being faulty. Apparently for the rear window the top three bars aren't meant to clear and are the aerial, slightly suprised with this but as I have nothing to contradict their diagnosis I'll accept it.

That's exactly what it is, most cars are the same but usually cover a smaller area. It looks a bit drastic from outside the car as it is such a big area but because of the very shallow angle of the glass it doesn't lose much when looking in the rear view mirror.

The warranty specifically covers 'failures', including those through fair wear and tear, as opposed to covering damage done by previous owners which is what a broken line in the heater would be, if it was the cabling or electronics behind it you would be covered.
