Time to swap my CLS 350 Shooting Brake for a CLS 63 Shooting Brake. Advice?

I’m going to try an RS6 this week hopefully.

Ideally I just want someone to say that having 4wd doesn’t actually matter and getting the power down is actually ok in the AMG

RS6 is an awesome piece of kit and arguably the better all round car. The RS7 you could argue is classier and the boots still pretty big.

And as per my other posts traction is something Mercedes now agree with and what I need.

Interesting, hadn’t considered an rs7 but boot does look quite big still. I should say I’ve upped my budget to about 42k, not sure if that changes things in terms of what I should consider.

Getting the power down is definitely OK in a RWD AMG, however it won’t launch quite as quickly from standstill as an RS6 with AWD/4WD, but it will accelerate a little more quickly as speed rises.

Can’t remember who told me I should get an RS6 instead but I can’t get it out my head now!

Anyone driven both an RS6 and a rwd 63 amg and can shed some light on the differences?

It was me and I know the feeling having seen how quick they move from a standstill on a less than perfect surface. They might not sound as good as a '63' but that can be remedied....

I have a private proving ground that might look similar to some local roads. The XFr is way slower round it than the A35. Only on one straight can it catch up but roundabouts and some fast bends it doesn't know which way the wee hot hatch went.

I've had both a C6 RS6 and a C7 RS6. The V10 in the C6 was epic (mine was a "plus" with 575 bhp) but didn't it like corners. The C7 was was a fabulous car, traction was incredible in all conditions and it was ok in the corners. I had an epic drive down a certain A road one February, horribly damp and greasy but the RS6 pummelled its was down the road and traction off roundabouts was fantastic. My brother, who has an M5, drove it for a bit on that journey and was gobsmacked at the traction. Downside was the quality of the dashboard which looked the same as a regular A6 and very placticy. Sound can be improved by unplugging the connectors on the valves in the back box, fitting a Miltek (or similar) or removing the centre resonators, but it will never, ever sound as good as a C63! I miss the traction in the wet occasionally but my C63 is way more fun for more of the time, has a much bigger sense of occasion and doesn't need to be ragged senseless to be enjoyed. Also had an early Panamera GTS but won't bore you with that now!

Go on, bore me!

People ha
Go on, bore me!

People have been posting pictures of RS7’s and talking about RS6’s, are you not sleep induced yet?

Audis are boring cars, with an image problem.

At £42k you are almost on a CLS63s SB, it might not get all the power down but it will be much more fun trying. I say Audi’s are dull because it’s right every time in a Quattro, I don’t see the fun in that.

I know, sorry I’m just trying to explore all my options as for me, it’s a big purchase, hence all the questions.

So at 42k, excluding an Audi, which I agree is boring but extremely competent, is there anything else similar I should be considering?

Surely a great car but doesn't meet the practicality requirement. I know, being picky

B5 F10 Alpina touring if you can find one.... half the thrill will be the search!

5 touring doesnt have that big of a load area though.

If you can find one then an XFR-S Sportbrake would be a left-field suggestion and it’ll hardly lose any money!

(Not digging Audi’s either personally, bit drab)

Ok so here's my current thoughts.

After a brief flirt with the RS6, I'm 99% sure I'm ruling it out. Everytime I look at it all I see is bland and plastic. And given I'm spending most time inside, I want to have the feeling of luxury and being comfortable rather than feeling bad every time I look at the dash, which knowing me, I will do.

IN terms of the CLS, my main concern was putting the power down, but realistically, how many standing starts at full throttle am I going to do. In gear acceleration is probably more important and that feeling of torque, and my understanding is that when the wheels aren't losing traction, the Mercedes will give me more of that feeling.

My only other option is a Panamera Turbo S of the first gen facelift variety. I haven't ruled this out yet but something is putting me off and I can't put my finger on it. I don't LOVE the front end but could live with it, but I think the CLS still wins.

The Jag doesn't really suit me, my brother in law has an F Type R and I would have that, but that's probably one of the only ones I'd have right now.

So that leaves me with the CLS AMG S which I should be able to find in budget if I'm patient, or the W212 E63. Similar interiors it seems, but although It adds to practicality, I prefer the swooping lines of the back of the CLS more than the rear of the E. I would definitely have a W213 E but they aren't in budget and I would quite like to experience the 5.5

What are your thoughts on my conclusions and have I missed anything?!

I have this on my radar, I doubt it will be around long:
