Tiptronic Gearbox Problem

Hi...I have a 2000 E320 Cdi diesel with Tiptronic gearbox. Gearbox works fine in Drive, but has a problem when trying to use Tiptronic. The gearbox changes gears, etc., but when the gearshift lever is released it reverts back to Drive. Having played with the gearshift, I have established that the spring return appears to position the gearshift too far to the right when it is released, thus causing the gearbox to move itself to D again. If I hold the gearshift slightly to the left of its released position, the gears hold in Tiptronic mode. The fault does not appear to be the gearbox, but the positioning of the gearshift lever. There is a lot of movement available to the left, but very, very little to the right. Can the gearshift lever position be adjusted? I would appreciate any help that you can give me. Thanks...JB

I doubt the lever can be adjusted, but I wouldn't be surprised if the switch that detects the side-to-side movement can be. Getting in as far as that switch could be challenging though.
