Is there a limit to the size of SD card you can use in a TomTom sat nav. I had a 2gb card in it no problem. Then I bought an 8 gb SD card but the TomTom does not recognise it.

Jim.

The 8GB card is SDHC.

Only pretty new devices support this standard. Which tomtom model do you have?

Why would you want bigger than 2GB for tomtom anyway? You can get the whole of Europe and the US on a card that size cant you?

To be honest I don’t know. I got the card and copied all the maps and stuff on to it. When I put the card into the card reader on the laptop it opens TomTom home page like the other one did, but when I insert it into the sat nav it doesn’t work.

It’s the 710 about 3 years old. With the 2gb card I can only get the Western Europe map on it that’s why I bought the bigger card. So is the sat nav too old for that card ?

Had a similar problem with a 4 year old laptop. The guys on here put me straight.
The newer SD cards don't work with older readers.
I have no knowledge of TomTom - do they have a USB port?
My problem was solved (as suggested) with a £1 usb card reader from Poundland!
It was a 2gb card that caused me problems

The laptop is only about 2 months old it’s reading the card it’s just the sat nav that doesn’t read it.

Jim.

does your camera support it?

I don’t know, I never realised there was so many different SD cards. I will just go and have a look.

Jim.

Physically test it, some of the "higher quality" manufacturers supported SDHC without stating so, as long as the stuff isn't too old.

Mike

I just deleted all the sat nav stuff off the card and tried it in the camera and it works, so all is not lost. :bannana: :bannana: I think the camera can take about 5500 pictures now, will take me about 10 years to fill that up lol.

All Tom Toms have a 2Gb SD limit as this is the max you would ever need unless you were putting the complete global Map on there! I have The whole of Europe (not just Western) on a 2Gb card and have seperate cards for the other countries I visit Australia, Africa, USA etc

I have two 2gb cards one is for western Europe and the other for US and Canada, I just thought that I could put them all on to one card but will just have to stick with the two cards.

I must admit I thought of doing that as well but was advised against it because of the 2 Gb limit and also if you cram more than one map set on a card it starts to cause problems with Tom Tom home, so I'm told.

The reason I bought the bigger card was every time I connect the TomTom to the pc for upgrades it tries to put the maps for US/Canada on as well, then telling me that there is not enough room on the card. I never knew that there was a limit to the size of card that’s why I went for the 8 GB, but you live and learn.

Jim.
