I saw this on autotrader… Such a terrible waste of a car! Would make a nice ornament on the driveway though…

Perfect donor car for parts.

For just another £2k (£4k) you can buy a 2.7 Boxster on the same mileage with no obvious faults.

Boxsters are crazy bargains: too many still running but rejected by people who can't be bothered to maintain them.

Compare that to £20k for a 911 convertible in good condition on the same mileage.

You might get a 986 for £4K and not a great one, but not a 987. They are crazy bargains though! They’re going up in value too. It’s the whole 944 scenario where prices dropped to nearly nothing and now a good one fetched good money!

On your point of the 911… a lot of people don’t seem to like the 996, but it’s a sensational car and many under £20k for decent examples. Very cheap for what it is and again I think prices will rise before too long!

I was looking at 986 Boxsters in the summer. I’m still so so tempted to pick one up for around £5k… some beautiful early ones around and can spend a bit of money over time renewing components.

Fair enough. My point was about a 986 for £4k, but £7k would buy you a very nice 987 with no additional bills to pay....

I know some love to buy in order to fettle but, at these prices, maybe better just to carefully buy a good one?

Agreed about the 996. We go through this process with every generation, as the 20 year old ones get dismissed and then rebound as the good ones move into "classic territory."

And then there's the Cayman halfway in between....

I’ve looked many times, Cayman in particular seem a real bargain but, for me not enough bang per buck.
Fab looking I’ll give you, but IMO just lacking that extra performance.
I’m looking for a vehicle that will give the old a girl a proper beating if I’m going sports car with that extra expense 😉

You are making me want to start looking again! I know there is new and really expensive, amazing Porsches… but I love these older ones. A better time for cars in my opinion. Yes, there can be troubles along the way, but I’ve been cautious all my life. I’d like to take a risk for something rewarding for once!

Cayman: 0-62 in 4.7. Kerb weight 1400kgs

Just put your foot down....

But then a little bit more gets you an SL55

I get that! I was thinking to myself today driving the old Merc that I used to go after performance and I’ve had some very fruity cars, but I’m not that much into it anymore. Something with a bit of pace and good handling is all I want these days. It’s going to see off most standard cars on the road and I want to feel the pedigree and history behind the car. I’d love a Cayman definitely. In certain colours with the right wheels for the car they look stunning. I’ve seen a few that have been neglected and look terrible and I can’t think why on earth someone would want one to do that to it!

I have a 996 C4S.
It’s a peach.

Amen to that. Drives like a peach and looks like a peach.
The Cayman is "just" 90% of the performance for half the price.

I didn’t realise Caymans were that cheap.
Was comparing a 2006 Cayman 3.4 on £13k (see above) to a 2006 911 C4S on £28k

I’m all honesty I didn’t know that the 911 cabs were going for more than the coupe.

They’re only a 2 seater as well aren’t they??

Twas a typo. Corrected. Cabs always cheaper than the coupe. ("Because they're not worth it.")
