Too much money for just a driveway ornament?

Never mind 911 or Boxster cabs, why not look at something simpler with character - like a 968, especially a nice cab like this one :
I know this car well - I owned it for 8 1/2 years (after 12 1/2 years of 968 tip coupe ownership!) and traded it in to Max Bradley exactly 3 years ago today, he's had no joy trying to move it on at anything from £20k to £14k so has finally put it on CC, it needs a cam/timing belts change and rollers check, plus inclusion of the Porsche wind deflector it had when I PX'd it, but it's a lovely car and drive, and even though there are things about the SLK280 I replaced it with that I like, I'm tempted to swop back! Be aware that CC's buyers premium is 5%+VAT of the sale price, min £600.

I absolutely love that! Go get it… do not hesitate!

That is glorious. I did 924, 944 and Boxsters but skipped the 968, due to aging parents. Always thought that the 968 was the definitive handling development of the 944 / turbo / S2 / 968

Difficult to price it against a younger Boxster or SLK, but that there's a very special 968 in a glorious colour.

The reason I PX'd it for the SLK was twofold - the sports seats, with high hip and shoulder bolsters, made getting in and out of it for these 2 OAP's with dodgy backs a bit of a problem, especially roof up (not too bad roof down). Secondly, the mohair roof meant I was a bit precious about leaving it on the driveway or using it if the weather was iffy/wet - even though I did many times use it in the rain and the roof never leaked. However, it is a far more practical car than the SLK - we did a 19 day 2600 mile europe trip in it that would be impossible in the SLK (BC, you don't know what my wife packs for even a weekend away!!), and although the SLK is a nice drive, it's nowhere near as engaging as the 968. Another consideration is local-ish availability fo servicing - Porsche indies are in short supply, I won't use the closest one (P9 in Marden) so AFAIK it's La Rose in Kemsing, 40+ miles away, or maybe Class Cars in Sandwich, again many miles away. The SLK is much easier, I used to have a great guy 8 miles away but even now it's another garage about 12 miles away with full Star/xentry etc.

Guess I have about 4 days to decide, as that's how long the auction has to run - unless it does not reach its (hidden) reserve, which I suspect will be north of £10k, as his last listing on his website had it at £14k (he gave me £13k on PX against the £7k for the SLK, but CC's buyers fees as min £600 for sales up to 10K and 6% on sale price after that, and I know it needs a £400+ belts change service!).

BTW, it had a £300 genuine Porsche wind deflector when I PX'd it, no sign of it in the listing, and as 1 of the 2 blanking pieces from the rear quarter interior panels had gone missing...

I think it’s a lovely car and you already have a connection to it. The things you’ve mentioned such as big service and missing parts sound like bargaining leverage to me. Those seats might be tricky, but look how glorious they are!

Handsome "high days and holidays" car, but it's not easy comparing a 14 year old to a 30 year old.

To my eyes it would need garaging and it won't be anywhere near as straightforward to do a 3,000 European tour in it.

The wind deflector and bits aren't an issue and could easily be found.

But, in your shoes, I would be wondering about a facelift SL350 rather than a return.

That’s lovely, but I think there is something to buying that Porsche you can’t get from a more modern SL. I love Mercedes, obviously, but when you sit in that Porsche it must be like stepping back to a different time. The surroundings and the feel. Imagining the absolute Boss that picked that up when it was brand new as they drove down the road, top down, aviators on their face 😆… That might be a part of choosing a car like that. It would be for me… not that I will get the chance to find out!

Or you could forget all about Porkers and get a nice Honda S2000?😍
240bhp
0-60 6secs
150mph
Great handling

Or go all out and get a Honda NSX.

Unfortunately an SL is not an option - my garage is a foot too short, the 968 or the SLK fit (just!). At one time I thought about extending my garage forward by 3ft (which would be feasible) but decided it was not cost effective.
