Top up oil or not?

It's to provide additional oil cooling. The greater the quantity of sump oil the greater the reserve for heat is.

Fair enough, it still seems like a huge range for an acceptable oil level.

If the cooling would be compromised by running the car at the lower level, why have it set that low?

Why not make the max level mark at the full 11 litres, and the minimum at say 9 or 10 litres?

Just curious :)

This car was designed for hard use and 10,000 mile service intervals. The mindset was that every day of the week I can drive to work at 155mph for an hour and then drive home again doing the same. So it needs the extra leeway.

I remember a story about a Brabus where the owner wanted 50,000km service intervals as his commute was something like 4000km a week. They just said yep, not a problem.

Thanks for the extra information.

As a matter of interest, what's the oil consumption typically like on these engines?

I use about a litre every 5000 regular miles.

I used 1.5 litres after 3.5 days of hard use doing 3160 miles.

It's pretty good for an old engine but I let it warm before running it hard and also don't abuse it in any way. I also don't nanny it like some who wont run it past 3000rpm till they've driven 10 miles.

I'd rather an engine use some oil than none.

Right, our ML270 is showing 1100 miles to next B service - booked in for 1 September.

Tomorrow we're heading off on holiday, towing a caravan, and a 410 mile round trip, plus mileage whilst we're away. I'm guessing we'll cover 700-800 miles before the service.

Just checked the oil, and it was just below mid-way between min and max. Topped it up with a litre of fresh Mobil 1, but was reluctant to fill it up to much - as it will bump the miles to next service right up, and I don't want Service Plus to refuse to pay.

What do you reckon - am I safe or not?? Just looking for some reassurance really.

Dieselman - where are you!!??

PS Don't top up by torch light, it now looks like a snail has been under the bonnet!!

I checked the morning after I topped it up - having driven a couple of miles - and the miles-to-go didn't change. I checked again about 70 miles later and it had increased to 2900 miles to-go!! AArrgghh!!

We did just shy of 800 miles, and so it had 2100 miles to-go when it went in for the service on Monday. No problem regarding Service Plus - it had done 14600 miles since last service.

It must be nice being able to see that the oil level is half way between min & max. The electronic oil checker either says OK or add 1 litre.

The ML has a the electronic checker, and two dipsticks. One you you have to open the bonnet for, the other the drivers door. :D
