Tough old cars

Probably because it has been restored. The BMW E9 of the period was made by Karmann as well and they are terrible rust traps.

I went to buy some parts for a car from someone who had 16 Peugeot 205 in his garden. None of them had any rust.

I bet his neighbours love him , what would that do for house prices in the area ?

The distribution of cars in this age range will have been skewed by the scrappage scheme. You'd have to really love your Peugeot 205 (non-GTI) to turn down £2k for it...

Being well built to begin with is of course an important factor.

However, cars that last longer invariably tend to be of simple mechanic design and using common running gear.

This means that there is not much to go wrong, and when something does it is easily accessible and cheap spare parts (or second hand ones) are plenty.

Basic Vauxhalls and Fords also fall in this category. And small Fiats in Italy... they just last forever.

Don't forget the odds are greater if there are more to begin with.
I wonder how many mk1 Ford Focus we'll see in 20 years. I see them everywhere!

WARNING, sweeping generalisation on the way...
I'd venture to say that *most* people driving around in a Peugeot 205 wouldn't be that interested in a brand new car or can't afford one.

...and then someone imports one to the UK and within months of arrival it falls to dust like hyper slow motion film of a vampire in sunlight...

205s were galvanised apparently. May explain their rust resistance.

They reported him to the Council... :D

He built the houses on his land, so they don't have much choice.

You only got £2k allowance against a new car, not cash.

The strange thing was, the Guy I met had a new BMW 330d Coupe...but he kept that under a tarpaulin.

No FIAT since 1990 rusted at all.

Toyota Carina's.....they never rust and they never go wrong. There's still loads of early ones about ie K reg's onwards

Yup, :thumb: Here's mine...

With my GTV next to it, also perfectly reliable and NO rust.

Being a breakdown driver allows me to see a pretty fair sample of what is and isn't "tough and reliable" and also makes me think it's a good idea to have a Carina E as our everyday family car.

Classics that are cherished don't count, apart from the Celica, the cars I saw were being used, I'm guessing, as normal everday cars, the Celica was boyed up, and more of a statement.

Round here there are plenty of people to whom the scrappage scheme was out of reach, so oldies are still everyday transport.

For me it was interesting that these cars were still providing cheap everyday transport, and, you'd assume weren't costing too much to maintain.

I see a s124 regularly, a 300 diesel with rotten front wings, and a full length galvanised roof rack that is a tool rather than an object that is pampered.

Golf Mk11 is one of the great all time cars in my opinion, had one years ago, beautiful, see a white Driver from time to time which is nice. Not seen a Corrado for a while now, used to be an N reg Storm VR6 down the road, but haven't seen it for some time.

The old car that appears the most on GSVIew is the Peugeot 405
For more sporty stuff the MK 2 Supra is in good numbers

Saw a dirty 1992 Peugeot 205 diesel chugging along the M6 this morning.

Not a touch of rust to be seen.

My 96 Golf VR6 is rust free and driving superb. Where as there is rust on my 08 GTI ED30.
