Tow bar on a C63 AMG

Hi there. Am new to the forum and wonder if I can ask your help. I'm looking to buy a C63 AMG to replace my VXR8. However I need to fit a tow bar to it to tow a dinghy/small yacht. Yacht will be o braked trailer and won't exceed 100kg all up.
Authorised Mercedes dealer say it can be retro fitted but I'm wondering if anyone knows if it would invalidate the insurance as the original car spec doesn't state a towing ability. Just wonder if that therefore means a tow bar on the C63 is not Type Car Approved for EU/UK . Any help gratefully received and apologies for perhaps not posting in the right area.

I realise it might look a bit bizarre but once you have a v8 you don't want to back!

You are correct, the saloon is not type approved for tow bar fitment. Ask the dealer about this, it would be interesting to hear their response.

On the E63 AMg the towbar isn't type approved, however, I can't say about the C63.

Have you looked at the manufacturers websites, say Westfalia, Brink, Witter and also the MB website under accessories/applicability?

To be sure, check the car's VIN plate. If no gross train weight (GTW) is given then it isn't type-approved for towing ... in which case it would be illegal to fit a towbar.

Thanks all, much appreciated. The Mercedes franchise dealer was convinced it was ok......but I think not. Perhaps an E350 it is to be.

Ask him to put it in writing...in case of a warranty claim...he may become less convinced.

As above it's more than a warranty issue - you are breaking the law if you have a towbar fitted to a non type-approved car.

Tow bar on a C63 .....don't do it. :ban:
