I have got a Toyota Corolla that has a squeal coming front front offside wheel area. It's intermittent and is a loud metal on metal type grinding noise when it occurs. I don't think it's the brakes as it disappears the second the brakes are pressed •. Have checked the discs for scoring and have checked for stones trapped etc and for the dust plate touching. As far as I can see it is none of these.. Any ideas???

Not bearings either as there is no play and no vibration ... Sounds hideously loud when it's happening though

Have a real good look down the back of the disc and back plate .Did you go over some gravel not long back .The back plate or dust shield as we called them as we made them at the place i worked . They have just the place to hold stones in there ..I had this problem one night going on a night fishing trip at 10pm .Looking the next day before i started off home thats what i found. It had stuck in there , and i had problem removing it .If it is its good luck .

Also check for a sprung metal tab on the brake pads that is designed to do exactly what you describe when the pads get low. It produces an audible squeal that is very loud during normal driving but disappears during braking.

Thanks for the replays fellas. Il take a look Monday when I can get it up on a trolley jack in work

Just to close this off my Mrs thought the noise was coming from the front end so had we discs and pads I the front. One of the front discs had a rust grove on the lip which had worn the pads unevenly... Anyway the noise wasn't that as its come Back today a day before I hopefully sell it. It is in fact the rear calliper that was sticking slightly and has now worn the rear pads through. Only reason I know is as the Mrs pulled up I went outside and the wheel and disc were red hot. Now have the dilemma do I sell the car as is and give a hefty discount or do I potentially get the calliper sorted along with new pads and possibly discs and sell for my original price ...
