When the above vehicle is started a message appears advising “Traffic Sign Assist Inoperative”.

When attempting to Activate this function in the Settings menu the same message appears and prevents Activation.

This first happened 5 days ago and is still Inoperative.

Have cleaned the windscreen where the camera are.

Been in touch with MB (still waiting a reply) asking if the Mercedes Data Base that Command imports the information for this Traffic Sign Assist function is offline and a fix.

An examination of the internet has revealed that this has been a problem on a number of occasions but I cannot find a fix.

Any one had a similar problem and had a fix?

Regards

John

It doesn't get it from online. The camera reads the signs, and alongside with what it sees and whats in the Nav Database (i.e on the hard disk) and the country car is in (from GPS) it works out the speed limit (which is why it can tell you whether the National Speed Limit sign means 60 mph)

So there is probably an issue with the camera - but Xentry Diagnosis is needed to know ...

Just "hijacking" this thread a little bit - though this may help in sussing out what's happening with JJBML's car - to add that something rather spooky happens with the Traffic Sign Assist ("TSA") in my car (a 2013 facelift W212).

Back in March I was travelling south from Lancashire, initially on the M6, all the way down to Hertforshire. No problem at all with TSA... however on the return journey north later the same day, as I came close Birmingham, I got the TSA Unavailable message. I'd owned the car for about a year up to that point and not had that error before. Anyway I carried on and when I got to close Wolverhampton it reactivated and was fine for the rest of the journey - and indeed remained working fine until a couple of weeks ago...

... I was travelling south down the M6 again and as I approached Wolverhampton, the "unavailable" message flashed up. I carried and on and as I got a little way south of Birmingham it started working again. Now I fully expected that on the return journey it would do the same thing between Brum and Wolves... but it didn't. Very odd!

So whatever causes the outages seems to be both location- and direction-dependent?? I wonder if in the Brum-to-Wolves area of the M6 the roadsigns have had some weird coating applied to them which causes the car's camera to get confused?... Though that wouldn't explain why the problem only crops up when travelling in one direction but not the opposite.

I should also add that, other than this peculiarity, the car has had no faults whatsoever in the 18 months I've owned it.

Any theories?

Apologies to reopen an old thread. Could I ask if anyone knows what happened with this error. When I start my car I get the error 'Traffic sign assist inoperative' and also can't activate via the menu. Navigation works fine, any ideas?

First step is too ensure the windscreen is clean around the cameras.

Hi, thanks its squeaky clean. I know the windscreen has been replaced very recently, I just bought the car so cant say when. Would this cause any issues, I only get this message nothing else.

The sensor needs recalibrated after a new screen, maybe it was never done?

I can't confirm if it was done so maybe a place to start. Would this be a dealer trip or is anyone able to help with this. I'm new to Mercedes and have had a fair few audis and know enthusiasts have VCDS etc and wondered if similar software is available by home users.

Mercedes system is called STAR, dealer or indy is your best bet, but you can buy your own set up if you think it's worth while.
