Hi all,

I have read the official line,
but want to know if there is any way of getting a private no. off a car with no tax or mot.

I havn't found a gem on a barn find wreck.
Just 6 years ago we put my wifes beetle off the road. (sorn, garaged).

It was one of the first "new" beetles n she'll never sell it, but didn't want the mileage over 50k.

Anyway i bought her a reg from the dvla for it 14 years ago. It's still on it.

I want to keep the beetle off the road, but wouldn't mind getting the plate off and on to her other car.

Pain in the backside to mot as i checked today and all the disks and pads'll need changing (just to rust up again).

I have the title certificate as well as the v5 and all paperwork.

I know the rules are there to stop total scrappers having their old numbers nicked, but as i bought this plate myself surely i can transfer it without putting the car back on the road first?

any advice welcomed

cheers

paul.

Sorry Paul but I think there's no way around it. To transfer or retain a number from a vehicle, the vehicle has to have a current MOT cert.

+1 will need a valid MOT as far as I know. I think the only exemption that can be obtained is if the MOT failure is recent and you make the decision to scrap the car as being beyond economically viable repair.

only if the beetle registered or any other car prior to 1960 is now mot and tax exempt hence, u can remove plate but could be requested to bring for inspection, and also why many ebay lots prior to 1960 have non transferable no plate "sold as projects"

Cheers guys,

I thought this would be the case, but hoped there was some backdoor.

Not the end of the world, it'll sail an mot other than stuff from standing for years ( god hope the tyres are ok).

thanks

paul.

with mot of course the beetle will be worth more anyways if u decide to sell it

Might be cheaper to buy another plate

You may be able to borrow a set of wheels with good tyres.

I would just get it down the MOT station after a bit of a run.. you never know.

Rusted brakes arent a failure, only an advisory. They fail if they dont meet the braking efficiencies on the rollers.

Ditto post #2...
