Hi All

I am having problems.

Popped down the shops today.
no problem going not faults.

Got back into the car and when I engaged gear it banged into drive.
Pulled away fine but didn't change gear and would not go into reverse.

Had to stop switch off the car to get it to go into reverse.

I am guessing the gearbox is in safe mode at it would not change gear to get home.

Please can anyone give me some info of things to check or is it straight into the garage?

Many thanks

Steve

Hello.
You said that "no problem going not faults"

Have you scanned it and return no fault ?

You say 'when I engaged gear it banged into drive'.

If the gear change did not fill normal, it could be an autobox issue. When have you last changed the ATF?

And, even if no messages on the display, the codes need to be read first.

I got the ATF changed with a service when I bought it about 5 month ago.
I have had no problems with gear changes up till now
If I was being critical I would say that it has not been changing up as quick as you would change if you were driving a manual but just thought is was the way it goes?

I'm not saying that this is the same problem.

When we had the exact same issue on our SLK it was needing a new battery.

^^ +1 finny enough there was a thread on this not so long ago, sorry though OP, cant recall the poster and benn unable to find it.

Hi Olly

Do you mean it could need a new battery?

I will phone my indy in the morning.

lets hope the AA will foot All the bill?

Steve

I bought breakdown cover and had to use it when the manifold needed changing. They pay up to £475 not bad for £99

Booked in to Mercserve tomorrow.
They are going to put the Star on it to see what’s wrong.

If it was the battery on its way out would i expect to see other symptoms?

Looks like the gear selector is shot.
I am now waiting for the AA to come and tell me to take it to my garage.
Any ideas on how much it will cost?

Got the claim autorised by the AA.:bannana:
The part is £375+vat and fitting so I think I will still have to shell out about £175. so £650 in total.

Could be worse though, or is that for next time:crazy:

Borrowing my car from the Garage again:crazy:

The fitting of the new gear selector cost £610 all in

I did ask them to have a look around to see what could go wrong next.

I had the feeling that the ride was not the best. Everything checks out ok

It must be a combination of bad roads and looking for trouble that isn't there.

Please can I have some trouble free motoring for a while.

Steve

Thanks again to the AA it must be the best £100 I have spent
