1991 sl300-24 project,s124 280,w115 no interior, w108 project no engine
Hi all

I am slowly trying to clear my out of control car collection. What will be left is my 300sl-24.
I bought it as a project just before prices crashed. It had CHG/misfire and oil leak problems and was generally tatty but in a nice colour and with some staggered Carlsson wheels.
Rather slower than anticipated I am getting around to sorting her. The soft-top has been replaces, I now have a hardtop (altho the wrong colour). I've replaced the wings (not yet painted) and have sourced a s/h 24v engine. But...

I've never been really into tuning in a max-power sort of way. That said I am somewhat inspired by Andy's c43/55 thread and a conversation I had with Olly last night. I want to make this car a little bit "special". After all, I have so many £readies invested in her I need to do something to make this car worth the spend, and kindof "standout" although not in a blingy way. Whilst a 55 drop in isn't really an option due to the differing technologies, I'd love some input as to what I could do to make her a bit quicker?

No budget in mind at this stage till I get more ideas.

Cheers guys

John, I would have thought the obvious route would be a turbo/twin turbo conversion given all the W124 300 24v ones out there already and proven to work well.

That was kind-of in my mind but I thought turbo'd cars needed lower compression to work well ?

How about somthing very different.

A yank V8...

I've read an article on a W124 having a small block Chevy V8 dropped into it....running on carbs and it appeared to be a fairly straightforward conversion.....now that would sound nice!!

got a link Martin?
cheers

How about just dropping a M119 in - effectively turn it into a SL500 ?

At least it will be tried & tested . I'd guess all you need is a cheap W140 donor car ?

Jonny...the article I read was from some time ago. I suppose the beauty of Carbs is that you dont have to worry about an ECU.

Oi you !!!
That said....hmmmmmmm. No doubt Carl at w140 will nab that one.

At 197k miles unserviced for four years it's quite a gamble.

Olly? Your thoughts?

What about a C43 engine? Would be interesting to give it an AMG lump.

Run.

Now you see that would make it a real "special" :thumb:

Then again, if attempted, I suspect special needs would be a more apt description for me.....

Thinking about it, wouldn't a C or E36 engine be of a similar vintage to the original car?
