Two Tonne Bully

Another runner is still in the way, needs more cutting and welding. Back to the fabricator.

You can see on the second runner, where they tried to hammer it in, well it's still not nearly enough.

Unfortunately, they're really busy and with weekend coming up, looks like middle of next week.

Big job but hammering will restrict the airflow. Is the new pipe of a slightly smaller diameter?

It does sort of look like it from the picture, but this was emailed to me, haven't seen in person. I'll ask.

This is a great thread... I've a 55 engine and am still amazed by the way it pulls.. Keep up the good work sir...... :thumb:

Thanks pal.

Looking like Weds/Thurs to be ready. Can't see what else could delay it, unless something new breaks, which wouldn't surprise me. lol

Just hope it's ready for Goodwood Festival of Speed on Saturday!

So fabricator didn't want to modify the 2nd runner without having the car with him, which is fair enough. Apparently this one is slightly trickier and wants the car in his own shop. He's too busy until July 11th. Which it's booked in for. And his shop can also fit everything too, and they're also slightly lower rates than my shop, so this is a little good news at least. Steve at Autoclass was great about it, he didn't charge for all the hassle of taking off and on and running back and forth to this fabricator. I know that's a few good hours of labour, and having my car take up shop space, and loaning the C180 Kompressor. Appreciated.

So my mechanic knew I wanted to go to Goodwood and he put all the original exhaust back on and had it ready for me to collect on Friday last week. Drove very well, can tell a difference with the new motor mounts, a lot smoother.

I could smell some odd burning smell on the short drive home, which I put down to oil/grease on the exhaust from re-fitting which is understandable. But then after 10 minutes the dash lit up with "accessory functions not available" then "battery/alternator problem" etc. But got it home, and was unable to restart. With car off, voltage showing like 11.2V.

*sigh*

Car going back to shop tomorrow evening.

Made it to Goodwood though, just not in the car I'd been planning since November 2016. But the FOS was incredible, so not too bummed. Just want the car sorted. Hopefully up and running this week, then headers on next week.

Your fabricator is right as you'd be back more than once if he doesn't have the car to do the work right first time.

Steve and James at Autoclass are good guys. I hope you get the alternator issue sorted.

Sorry to hear of the electrical issue, that's a shame with your plans you had. Well best of luck with the headers, i'm sure i'm not the only one keen to know how the cars turns out when fitted.

Alternator was toast. New one on, kicking ass. Still surprised how much a difference motor mounts made.

Didn't even realise I needed them. I'd done the engine rev on the brake with the bonnet open to check how much the motor moves, and it didn't really move all that much. Granted I only checked in D, not reverse.

Improvements:
1) Much smoother, significantly smoother.
2) Less rattles on start up and when revving the engine. Obviously the existing exhaust/engine was knocking on something because it always had a slight rattle on revs. That's gone now completely.
3) Less rattles on speed bumps and pot holes. Was also very noticeable before.

Car booked into the fabricator for Tuesday 11/07.

Engine coolant now needs a top up.

...every ****ing day something.... lol

Can't see any leaks though, so probably nothing.

Is your cooling split? You can start with pressure testing the cooling circuit.

Yeah, cooling is split. I topped it up the other day, seems to be holding fine. Can't see any leaks. Temperature's fine. Coolant reservoir looked nice and clean, oil looks fine. I'll put some miles on it and check the level again later.

Just dropped car to fabricator's. I'm working long days until Thursday, so hopefully pick it up that evening or Friday morning.

Winning hopefully.

Leaks can be miniscule and sometimes only let themselves be known when the system is pressurised by a running pump. Another option is to pressurise the circuit with a tester and watch for leaks. A typical cooling circuit tester kit is under £100. Worth investing in one as it pays for itself after a couple of uses. Fingers crossed all goes well with the headers.

Looks great the build sounds awesome love the 211 shape very clean not trying to hard just a luxury beast wirh everything you need without the looks of a midlife crisis, great job mate

So close...

Well I drove it, got halfway home and there was slight play in the steering wheel which was never there. Took it back, they tightened it up but now there's a bolt on the steering column which is hitting one of the runners. So left it with them tonight, pick it up tomorrow evening.

Initial impressions... sounds like a bully. A two tonne bully.

Good points:
WOT is hellaciously intoxicating. Holy hell is it loud at WOT, and sounds immense. Ferocious! Absolutely love it.

Bad points:

-Almost there, nearly perfect with fitment. Slight occasional rattle on the passenger side at certain low RPMs, sounds like it's vibrating the heat shield. Had to take it back for drivers side tweaking, as the steering column rotates on an elliptical lobe shape, so with wheel at about a 3o'clock position, a bolt was hitting a runner. Fixed at no extra cost, and got it back the next day.

-I think it's leaking. Fabricator wanted to try the fittings first and not weld it up, as it'll be a bitch to take off if we need to. Not sure if it's really a leak, or it's how these flex pipes sound. But I'll take it back and explore options, possibly some different clamps. At WOT you don't hear it, but at idle and partial throttle, it sounds very 'blowy'

-Desperately needs a tune. Rear O2 sensors are still active, but not plugged in, and ECU is reading it as super rich, and dumping fuel in. Pig rich. Stinks. MPG down to 14mpg on the motor way instead of 24mpg. And about 11-12mpg around town. Rough idle. Tune goes on on Monday, so will not drive it much, as I don't want to foul the plugs or O2 sensors. Feels stronger, definitely, but won't get the full effect until it's tuned.

In all, installation and fabrication took about 9 hours of labour. Possibly more, but I think Steve at Autoclass and Dan at FD (Flow Dynamics) Tuning & Fabrication felt bad it took so long, they may have been generous.

Almost there.

(still waiting for pics from the shop)
