Tyre valve broken (with TPMS)

Hi All,
Had my slightly bent front wheels straightened today.

The chap doing the work said tyre valves were corroded. Unfortunately one of them broke whilst finishing off and inflating tyre.

Car has tyre pressure sensors and he says I'll need a new sensor (circa 100 pounds).

Is this correct or can I just buy the valve stems alone?
EPC suggests valve stems are available separately.

Anyone know if this is the case?

Thanks,
shr

Less than half that price from MB for complete new sensors (circa £36 + VAT). I priced them from National Tyres recently and they were charging around £100 for each sensor and presumably other tyre fitters will be the same. Problem is that they have you over a proverbial barrel and may not want you to supply!

Before you pay them, if you are on good terms with your local MB dealership or better still if you have an Indy near you, ask them what they would charge you.

I'm sure there are repair kits available, but NTS and their likes probably won't supply them...too much money in new valves!

I see what you mean.

Would this do the job? Less than 25 pounds supplied and fitted.

I'll pop down to my local stealer today and ask if my car can just have the stems done.

The new stem at ~£25 might, but the complete valve at £167 fully fitted is a rip off!

Don't you have an independent tyre fitter near you that could do the job for the price of a puncture or thereabouts, you supplying the parts?

Ernie

Yep and that's what I'll be doing.
Ordered the valve stem from Stealer today. Should hopefully be installed by end of the week all going well.

Will let you know.

Update:

Got the valve stem changed over and all sorted, nice and simple.

Thanks ernie, you were spot on!!

Hello, my local dealer are telling me i need to have the car in to have the system reset, if you're not replacing that actual sensor, just the stem then surely thats not required?

I already have the alloy off the car and was planning to just drop the rim off at MB and pick up later.

If just replacing the stem then no reset required.
I'm not sure about if you're having the whole sensor changed.

My tyre pressure loss system works on, and I quote

While the vehicle is in motion, the tyre pressure loss warning system monitors the set tyre pressure using the speed of the wheels. This enable the system to detect significant pressure loss in a tyre.

Now, I have had the system warn me a few times over the years and the significant loss is about 10psi. I have no special tyre valves to assist, just the standard ones as fitted by the tyre shop. Is this a different system than currently fitted, my B Class is an 07 model.

Yes it's a different system. Your system alters you when the pressure in a tyre drops significantly. It's doesn't give you any numeric values of the actual pressures. As the name suggests, it warns of "pressure loss." It does not use a specific tyre pressure sensor and therefore only has a standard tyre valve stem.

TMPS is a pressure monitoring system giving instantaneous numeric values of the actual pressure in each tyre. This system requires a sensor in each wheel and a different type of valve stem that fits into the sensor.
