underwhelmed by e55..

Day and Night difference!

Will be driving the C63 in September and really looking forward to it. I have heard good things about the AMG speedshift box although I believe the Box in the C63 is 7 speed as opposed to the 5 speed version in the SLR? Not sure how this will affect the drive, if its like the BMW where you can set the box settings to match that of the driver then it promises to be good. Thanks for the info and I'll report back when I've driven it.

It has an awesome 7 speed and is better for it! :D You have 3 settings: Comfort, Sport and Manual. Basically

- Comfort is best for a more relaxed driving style with slower and smoother shifts, though it's still very very fast if you push the pedal down.

- Sport is best if you want to go from A to B in the shortest time. The gearbox is about 50% faster in shifts! The fantastic sound that accompanies the speed is a huge bonus!

- Manual is best for listening to the sound of the engine and EXHAUST! The gear changes are the fastest though I believe (on the public roads) this mode is best for showing off as you change down gears and the exhaust rev matches and barks. You will scare some bystanders doing this so watch out. You can also rev up and stay in the same gear as the engine slows the car down through the revs and listen to the exhaust gurgle and set of a set of mini explosions.

Plus, before I forget you also get to choose from 3 ESP settings.

- ESP On is good for day to day driving and especially on wet days. Mind you, it is still more lenient than the normal ESP On you find in non-AMG Mercs. You can still slide a bit and have some wheelspin before it cuts down the power and activates the brakes. I realized this when I drove an S500 for a day and found the ESP to be way more intrusive than in the C63, obviously comparing with both systems fully on.

- ESP Sport good for some more angled drifting and generally lets you play a bit more but stops short of throwing you into the nearest bush should you push too hard.

- ESP OFF means really OFF. No help unless you hit the brakes but with the power of this car....all I'll say is good luck if you over cook it and reach that stage. I would only switch it off if I was on a nice open race track. Japaneses Drift Kings watch out!

Lastly, the handling is also great! Very sharp and stable, much better than a BMW 335i coupe that I drove in March. I know it's not a fair comparison but it still gives some sort of idea as to what I'm talking about. Words can only describe so much about this car. You would need to test drive one to understand it even more!

I know, my interpretation is that he was saying that the driving experience of an E55 which is billed as a super saloon was underwhelming QUOTE]

yeah exactly i wasnt comparing to my cdi i was comparing with the expectations i had.. if taht makes sense

i was expecting a car that would allow my (growing) family to travel in comfort (8 points for the AMG here), but let me play hooligan when on my own (5 points here sadly). i thought the amg could do both, but im starting to think that no car really will..

so what i'll need is e55 for family transport, and a 911 gt3 rs or similar for daddy to go play at weekend :-D

right, i'm off to buy lottery tickets!
