I have a E 270 Cdi W211 fitted with 19" after market wheels - purchased from reputable suppliers.

I have just had front tyres changed and noticed that the inside edge had worn through to show the steel belt ! And yet the tread across the tyre was legal.

Is this tracking, or a problem, because I've gone to 19" from the 17" standard?

The rears were fine.

Any advice welcome. I've heard tracking adj on the W211 is expensive as it takes quite a while.

Tracking, I'm afraid, you need to get your front wheels laser aligned. If the insides of the tyres have worn at the expense of the tread surface then it sounds like the front wheels aren't parallel with respect to each other. As you view from the back of the car the wheels are probably pointing outwards to the front (if that makes sense, kinda hard to describe in text).

From what I have heard most Benzes take longer than normal to adjust tracking and/or front suspension.

Had an identical problem on a 928 on its original wheels. After a high speed run from London to Prague and back on new rubber had to replace both fronts and re-track as both inner sections were below legal requirement. The rest of the circumference had 5-6mm of tread. Only discovered this after leaving the road at a roundabout, but that was down to my right foot. Re-tracking solved the tyre problem and getting a merc with ASP solved the right foot problem.

Hi All,

Just thought I would bring an old thread up instead of starting a new one....

I have suffered uneven tyre wear on my front tyres
basically down to steel on both inside edges and 6-7mm on the rest.

only realised when I had a blowout on the motorway on Thursday evening, the AA pointed it out to me, as I have only every checked where I can see.

had two new tyres fitted at a national dealer at £165 each and I asked them to check the tracking.....it came back well in tolerance

so what would/could cause this as I don't want the new tyres to suffer the same...

BTW... the tyres are continental sport on factory fitted 17" Mercedes wheels on a w211 E270 Avantgarde

if you can point me in the right direction it would be appreciated.

Many Thanks
Mark

If tracking (toe) is right, it'll probably be a camber issue - unless they're rubbing on the suspension components?

Mine was caused by needing lower ball joints, which are being done now, don't want to be forking out for front P Zeros again soon!.
