On the A1 earlier today (Sandy Bedfordshire), I passed a speed camera van parked on the side of the road as they do. It was in a 50mph restriction and don’t think I was exceeding that but can’t be 100% sure. The thing is it had both of it’s back doors open and was not as visible as I thought they were supposed to be. Should they still be marked or could this be a new tactic to extract money?

Same here today by the Belfry, unmarked van, Camera on a tripod, backdoors shut, has to be number plate recognition... but what can they do next?

Think the ANPR vans are out to catch cars with no insurance / MOT / road tax, or 'wanted' drivers. Nothing to do with speeding, AFAIK. There's usually a cop a little way up the road waiting to jump out and pull anyone over whose plate sets off an alarm.

I was pulled in Leicester yesterday - didn't even see the van! It was a number plate one and the plod told me that I had been stopped because there was a 'notice' on my car! It turned out that my car has been cloned at some time. Thankfully, my car is the original but was glad to know and was given advice that if I received any notices from the Police that I should contact them immediately.

Never thought it would happen to me syndrome..... !!

my belief too

I regularly travel the same route in bournemouth, and there is often an unmarked hi roof white transit van with two clear windows at the top of the back doors with one or two little camera's pointing out of it. a little further on are a group of policemen just patiently waiting, and quite often I see them carting away cars on the back of breakdown trucks, and stuck on the back windows of the cars being taken away... A big poster put there by the police, NO TAX, NO INSURANCE.. NO CAR!! :bannana: very fitting, one less irresponsible b****rd on the road to crash into me or one of my family and not be insured.

now if they could do that for every moron who just has to use their mobile phone while driving without a hands free kit, I would be well pleased

There is regularly a van on my route home which is parked in a layby. Normally a couple of plod bikes 1/2 mile up the road. I think this one is definitely ANPR. Speed Camera vans , ANPR vans picking up untax, uninsured etc definitely get my support :D

I have recently seen two sets of people turfed out of their car at the side of the road.
Watching them emptying all their belongings nearly brings a tear to my eye,..not really.:)

My friend got a speeding ticket off one of these white vans (parked in a layby)

The stretch of road has radar gun warnings (but no fixed cameras) so drivers can expect it whenever the van is on that stretch of road.

I've seen speed camera vans in Warks. etc. but they're normally fairly conspicuous - parked side-on to the traffic, shooting through a wide-open sliding door. As with most mobile cameras, the aim seems to be to make 5,000 cars slow down rather than nick 10 or 20. But I'm sure there are some 'covert' ones :(

Big thumbs up for the ANPR ones, how often do you read in the papers about someone being convicted for a fatal accident when they had no tax / licence / insurance etc. Hopefully ANPR will take some of these scum off the road before they kill someone.

I believe they are not allowed to place any sort of speed camera (mobile, gatso, specs...) on a section of road that is not covered by speed camera signs.

How long before every port into the UK just has one big speed camera sign over the exit?!
