Hi can someone tell me if an Alternator from a 300E (104 engine)I have sat here fit a 500 sec (117 engine), My Brother picked the car up today after having loads of work done here in Somerset. The car has died on his way home the RAC have said it’s the alternator he has plans for the weekend so I will take this to him if I know it fits. I know it’s a long shot but anyone know for sure before I drive to London tonight…

Difficult to say. As long as the fitting points are the same it will work as long as both alternators are standard alternators.

The 500 will probaly have a more powerful unit but the 300 unit should work well enough.

It might be simpler to have the other unit repaired, teh only theing that normally goes wrong is the regulator pack or diode pack. I think this is the regulator gone, possibly as a result of flashing during the welding.

Thanks Will I have checked both Alternators are 80A Not sure on mounting though that's what I'm after. Would the welding really of caused that? How, flashing?

Where could it be repaired? He is in London NW3 Finchley road

Didn't know you'd suffered in the floods...

You should always disconnect the battery and alternator for welding as the sudden arcing can flash the components.

Must be a common problem leaky roof, I had to replace the lining...

That's what I thought we had all the welding done at a garage so surely they should have known that? Oh well it should be sorted soon. Thanks again Nav...:)

If Bro has a battery charger he could just charge the battery to get the car going.

I know I've asked that one this is his first car he has no "mechanics tools" at all. Nav has sorted an Alternator so just got to hope it has enough juice to get to the garage to have it fitted...

He Is home now BTW it only died twice:rolleyes: but he has plans to get to Norolk...
