Car
1998 C180 estate
1998 w202 estate, audio 10 cassette head unit, MB 6 disc changer in boot (OE retrofit)

I've got a bit of a problem with my CD changer.

Everything used to be ok, I then installed a different head unit which wasn't connected to the changer. This worked ok too.

I have now re-installed the original audio10 unit as I have sold the car (hence the panic).

When the CD button is pressed, the display says No CD. There is power at the changer, as the eject function works. I just can't get the changer to function.
The battery was disconnected for a wee while, but I've had it disconnected in the past with no ill effect.

Any ideas please??

I'm in a bit of a flap as the car is meant to be getting handed over in the next day or two.

Sounds like you didnt plug the fibre optic cable back into the head unit properly (or the fibre optic into the CD changer).

There should have been
aerial connector
A connector 10 pin
B connector 8 pin, most often physically part of the A connector
C connector 8 or 10 pin (can't remember)
Fibre optic connector (2 orange fibres) - be careful with the fibres you can fracture them internally

A gives power to the unit (etc) B is speakers C sends power to the CD changer (and wakeup for fibre optics) Fibre connector is for sound/control of CD changer (and integrated phone / bose / voice recognition if you have them)

Cheers

Problem Solved!

Thanks for the response Richard.

After a bit of searching on the forums, and the wider net, I have managed to get it to work.

There is no C connector in the car. The changer was a retrofit (by MB) and the only extra connectors were the optical one and the one I missed ;

one wire connected to pin4 of the C connector on the head unit.

All works ok now.

Was able to confirm pins on this site;

Thanks again.

As you found, that is the wakeup signal - which tells the CD changer to wake-up its fibre optics when head unit is on .. (otherwise CD would drain battery)
Being a retrofit I guess they wired the power direct to a fuse somewhere rather than taking CD changer power from the C connector

Glad its sorted !

What have you replaced the car with ??

Cheers

Unfortunately, it's going to be replaced by a Fiat Scudo van.....

My wife is about to open a florist shop so we needed a van. I was chatting to one of my neighbours and he offered to buy the Merc, so I took him up on it.

I've taken a bit of a loss, but thats life.

I'm pretty sure I'll make another foray into MB ownership as soon as possible.

Probably another C class estate, probably not a 180. Fancy something with either more go for the mpg, or just more mpg. i.e C240 or maybe C250/220D.

Thanks again.
