Can anyone please advise on a firewal and anti virus program, pref not from Symantec. I have the internet security package from Symantec for a Mac but have gone back to PC. As cheap as poss please as my son wants to go surfing at weekends when he is with me. If anyone wants some Mac software I have Toast Titanium, and the Internet package which are a couple of years old and looking for a new home. Thanks in advance. ;)

Hi....

I use the 'AVG FREE EDITION' availiable here http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1 have been using it for about 3yrs now, doesn't cost a penny, plus you get free upgrades.

Plus, I also use 'Mozilla Firefox' as a browser, not as many holes as IE.

I find it all quite adequate.

Ciao, Bill.

Yep, I'd second those recommendations:

AVG AntiVirus (Free)
ZoneAlarm Firewall (Free)

and add:

SpyBot Search and Destroy
Microsoft AntiSpyware

With those, and your Windows installation updated with the latest patches from Microsoft, you should be pretty much secure.

Just come across this site today, auditmypc.com ; once you've installed your security software, might be worth clicking and doing a couple of tests.

I'll add my recommendation of :

AVG Anti-Virus
Zone Alarm Firewall

Which both run together without issue as well as the following options :

SpyBot
AdAware

Im running Bit Defender 8 Professional Plus at the moment. Its got firewall, antivirus and antispam built in.Works a treat :)

Thirded (*EDIT* or fourthed even) :) I agree with Flyer...

Get AVG & Zone Alarm both fine products regardless that they are free too. Even though I use Symantec as my PC's came bundled with the software, I've recently had to rescue a friend's PC from some nasty infections and in their case used AVG & ZA, I was impressed.

I also use Microsoft AntiSpyware and Spybot and also Lavasoft's Ad-Aware.

Hehe just call me paranoid. ;)

Been using Zone Alarm fo a few years, upgraded to Pro for ease. Seems to work well

Spyware is included in upgrade.

Why pay ?
I removed the preloaded norton on my Sony laptop and like everyone else installed the free AVG Anti-Virus ,Zone Alarm Firewall,Spybot and ad-aware SE.They work just as well as the Macafee I used to have.
Better still I've got an Imac I've used for 5 years and you don't need to do all of this protection business on a Mac, OS 10.3 is far ahead of Microsoft for the home user like myself !

My works lappy is a Sony Vaio VGN-A217M and I rate it very highly, excellent piece of kit, solidly built, good sound but the best part of the package is the 17" Widescreen X-Black TFT screen... makes it a joy to use.
