Use an older version of Word? - Not if Microsoft have anything to do with it!

Just reread the article carefully at work; I missed an important point! Its the Office 2003 Service Pack, not the Windows Service Pack (which I couldn't seem to find!)

Not so fussed anymore :p I stopped using Office 2003 a while ago, and don't really regret it, I like Office 2007 even more than Latex!

Mr Gates strikes again...
Never had these issues when I was with Sun Microsystems. We used Star Office. Nor was there any down time due to virus attacks.

Worthwhile noting that there are many versions of Office 2003 and Office 2007. It was the case (may not still be the case) that only the premium editions used fully XML compatible file formats. All MAC versions do use XML file formats.
I have "liberated" copies of most versions and still prefer OpenOffice for it's smaller memory footprint. Working as a solution designer for a tier-1 hosting company means I can have up to 30 documents open at a time for ease of cross reference. Word, Excel and Visio all get rather slow under such conditions.
Most worthwhile upgrade in office was probably the right hand calendar pane in Outlook. Outlook 2007 is much better than 2003 but the rest of the apps in Office are much of a muchness. Not overly keen on the new ribbon instead of traditional menu's either. Suppose we'll all get used to it.
Just my 2p.
Oh yes, been testing Vista versus XP maily for application compatibility. If you're wise you'll stick with XP. MUCH faster on identical hardware. If you can afford one of those flashy solid state drives though the performance of Vista is blinding. Still far too many applications which don't run or run badly on Vista though. Call of Duty 4 as an example, not that I play during works time you understand ;)

I will use what I want and not be restricted.
