Ive just found that V8 can do birds eye view on the R230 SL
(but the SL can't do ETA with the latest head unit update)

Press MAP, hit a soft key, press display, press view, and you can select north, normal , or birds eye view

Can some one try that on an E/CLS/SLK class ?

Thanks

Richard

(nb, the SL comand-aps-DVD-version is made by siemens, most other European ones are made by Becker)

MY08 E-Class - I assume V8 = ETA on the display.

Just checked, only north and normal options.

Perhaps the MY09 COMAND does 3D?

No, V8 is the map disk version - can you have a look at the map disk in the DVD drive in the boot please ?

The ETA on the display on E/CLS/SLK is the MY2007 software update for the head unit.

Thanks

R

Well, it's stopped lashing down for a while so off I went....

V8 it is - B6 782 38 86 or A 211 827 15 65 or 1914.911 are the numbers from the box / CD.

Richard,

I took a look at mine last night. V8 and lastest updates on Head and Processor units. No joy with Birds Eye View.

SargeBenz

I have just purchased the V8 nav disc. The dealer confirmed that Birds Eye was available for the W211. However no Birds eye. Also the comand doesn't update as it says in the instructions. The bars come up showing the progress then the comand switches off. The instrcuctions dont mention this.

I wonder if Alfie can help on this?

The dealer said that all Version 9 DVD's have been recalled as they dont work properly in the UK

Any idea how many GB of data is the v8.DVD ??

(BMW's navi using Navteq/Teleatlas Data is about 6gb - Why on earth Mercedes does not produce a new version with full data ??
And they keep asking $$$$$$ ?? And they expect us to pay ???

I don't see the relevance to this thread but if you feel MB is asking too much of the disk, don't buy it.

At least my W221 update DVD was less than a single layer DVD can take even if it was burnt on a DL DVD. Bird's eye view does not even ask any additional space from the disk, are you after more POI data or a full UK post code search?

Hi there
Here is the relevance - I live in Athens and when I got to travel outside Athens on top of my comand (2007 model) I have to stick in the screen my PDA with Destinator7 - WHy ??? Because MB DVD has not got any data for even large towns !!!! BMW who use TeleAtlas data cover almost everything - So THE ANSWER IS I DO NOT THINK THE DVD IS EXPENSIVE I THINK IT IS A ROBBERY. AND AN INSULT TO SOMEBODY WHO PAID MORE THAN 3000 EUROS FOR THE NAVE AND HAS TO STICK A 300 EURO DEVICE ON AVANTGARDE'S SCREEN !!!!.
And is not that simple as you say "if you think it is expensive don't buy it". I want to pay and get what BMW owners and everybody else is geting. It is worth noting that for all other car makers you can get map updates from NAVTEQ except for Mercedes owners that they have to go to Mercedes to get any update !! And so we are stuck to get updates from Mercedes with Bird's Eye view (everybody else has got that feature), Maps with minimal data and we are happy here to discuss how happy we should be with that fantastic ETA future !!! And all this in year 2008 !!

FInally I was asking how many GB is the DVD you have (mine is 2,89) just in case the had any new update out.
Hope now you can understand
All the Best
George

P.S. I am seriously thinking of getting a 5 series !!!

Birdseye for W211 is coming out in the next major head unit flash AFAIK.

The R230 has had aerial view for some time now. This is a Siemens head unit feature. Strange how in Japan they managed that on a 2002 W203. But those were J-Panasonic head units though.

Forget about the cost and just enjoy driving.

Hi Miro
It is not the cost I am angry - It is that in the end of the day (outside Athens) I have to stick my PDA on my new E200's screen , and I do not like the sight of it !!
All the best

Can you put exact geo-coordinates or an exact address for an example so that others can try with their MB navigation unit.

I understand the mapping info that is needed for navigation (not just a digital map showing roads) has not existed long for Greece and it takes some time before the latest info becomes available on the MB navi disk. Which version did you say you are running currently?

Since on-line map services seem to cover Greek roads reasonably well, it should not take long before you can dump the PDA from your car. Just relax and enjoy the car while waiting.

I have to say that I've just about run out of patience with MB/TeleAtlas

I'm on holiday in Ireland at the moment, and the mapping is just pathetic.

I'm in a hotel 2 minutes walk from the centre of Cork, The Hotels been here since the 1870's. Even the road (a major one) doesn't exist on the V9 disk.

Last time I was here with my previous car (Citroen with Navteq data in 2005) the mapping was far better.

I wouldn't mind paying for updates now and again if it was just changes, but when its just 'here's another bit we've got round to' there has to be a limit.

When you look on the teleatlas site its pretty complete, It just seems they don't put it all on the disk, or take forever to do so.

I would find the built in Navigation tough to live without, but you do feel you're being ripped off

Well Look what happened to me when I tried to find some big towns with my E-Class. Navi below costing more than 3600 Euros was telling me I was "OFF ROAD" (although I swear I was Driving in a very nice A class Road) Thank God I had my MIO550 with Destinator 7 with me, so I went on.

Maps are by Navteq and Navteq has some really updated maps. However Mercedes do not produce many updates. If you go to NAVTEQ's site and you have any other car except a Merc they will sell you the latest map update- If you have a Merc tough luck , you have to go to a Merc Dealer who if he knows what are you taling about !!! , he will tell you that he does not know when the new navi update with maps will be available.

It is worth mentioning that BMW has got a really updated maps version and you can buy the maps update as soon as Navteq get some new ones out.

Until that time have your PDA with Nav s/w within your reach !!!!

Hi again
Firstly , I can get the exact geo-coordinates from my PDA and put them in COMAND however I get a message that I am OFF ROAD - so it is still useless.
Mapping is there and Navteq has got it reasonably well covered - only MB is not producing any updates - I am afraid that if MB pays enough Map companies (like TeleAtlas/ Navteq / NGi etc) it would not be a problem.

I can not understand why on earth they do not do what everybody else does i.e. let their customers buy map updates direct from Navteq or Tele-Atlas .

Finally I am enjoying driving - I just get sik when I see this sight of my PDA above my NAVI.
Best Regards
George

I understand that GEO coordinates don't help with your Navi if it does not have the local roads covered. I was after checking the status e.g. on my Comand but I would need to know the exact street to try it (unless my Comand does not have any roads from Greece).

For US owners MB allows navi discs being bought directly from Navteq. The discs are a bit cheaper than at the dealer there, but not a lot. The odd thing in the US is that the road coverage e.g. on the W211 navi is extremely poor, sounds like they reserve all smaller roads for SUVs (where the small roads are covered). This is nothing like the info missing from the Navteq database or that the info would not fit the DVD. W211 navigation discs are quite a lot cheaper than in Europe but I would prefer to pay more to get all roads included.

Again, my understanding is that Greece got map data relatively recently (a few years back) both from Tele-Atlas and from Navteq. MB is slow on getting the latest road data on sale, I only hope they get the existing Greece data pretty soon to your W211 map update discs.

Hi everybody

This morning I was told by Mercedes in Greece that in the end of August MB has released v9 of NAVI DVD for E-Class (NTG1)– which will be available in Greek dealers mid October.

Have you heard anything about this in your country ?? Can you cross-check with your sources ??
Thanks and Regards
George
