Ok so i decided to give the SL a tidy up before summer, fix a few stone chips on the front bumper/bonnet/wings etc
Im going to have to remove the V8 Kompressor badges on the wings, and iv just priced up new ones... £100 or thereabouts!!!! Crazy money for some plastic badges!
Is there anyway to save the old ones? Even the new ones dont come on double sided tape to ensure even, straight lettering so Im not sure what to do... any help would be great, thanks

Yes, what you do is place a large bit of masking tape over the whole badge whilst its still on the car. Then grab some dental floss and use it in a sawing action to cut through the double sided tape on the back of the badge. Once the badge is removed from the car the masking tape ensures it still remains correctly spaced. Then if you wish to put them back on simply re-double sided tape the back of the badge and stick them to the car, you only remove the masking tape once the badge has been stuck back to the car.

Putting adhesive tape on the back of each individual letter would be a complete nightmare.

Imo the only way is to replace the badges either original or cheap eBay versions.

Original come nice and straight in a line. So all you need to do is apply tape to the face of the badge to ensure it stays in line.

Cheap eBay ones from what I have seen don't come in a perfect line or with even spaces between the letters. This would require alot of patience and a steady hand to get a good result.

Even then from experience I doubt they would withstand a winters worth of road salt, especially in that exposed location.

Therefore my decision has been to go the original oem route having had some paint recently done. I have not rushed out to get them due to the eye watering £97 price tag.

I bought ebay ones for my C55 '5.5 AMG' and they were less than a tenner, they are also all straight and not individual letters. Seem to be stuck on pretty well.

Id try and remove them and put them back on, if you bodge it, you can always try some cheap ebay ones, if there no good you've only lost a fiver.

100quid for badges is just taking the piss.

Kompressor badges are a mare

I would also place a bit of masking tape below the badges and mark out the spacing of each letter.

cutting double sided tape wont be fun, but its do-able as long as you put some time into it

i seen the 5.5 amg badges but im not sure if they would suit the SL, would rather the kompressor badges back on i think! I have a spare wing with badges there that il maybe practice on first, if it all goes pete tong il maybe try an ebay badge

I got the 5.5 amg badges on my wings e55,, after messing around trying to put kompressor ones back gave up and went for something simple that look good aswell 16.99 a pair on ebay,, they stick very well too

e55 has a shorter wing or something so i think you will pull them off better, they may look a bit lost on a an SL. Dont suppose you could meansure the length of the badge if you get a chance and il see how it compares in size to the v8kompressor badge!

I was toying with the idea of that badge, correct me if Im wrong but its in the E63 style IIRC. My only reservation is it not looking original if that makes sense.

My issue is its not beyond the realms of possibility that I would make a complete hash of doing the bagdes with £97 down the drain.

you, sir, just saved me hours with a knife trying to cut around badges! thank you!

I will let you guys know how i get on! thanks
