Hi All

I've had rust on all four arches and quite a few stone chips here and there treated and the panels resprayed from a local indie in Sheffield. At a very good price, cash;). First impression is they have done an excellent job, colour matching is spot on and they have even sorted out a few other things at no extra cost.

Checked all arches, prefect. However on running my hand round them they is a tar like substance covering the edges. Is this normal?

Thanks Swoz

Yeah you got any pics swoz?

Mine came back from the bodyshop with silver underseal type stuff on all the arches.I noticed it was still tacky when I got home but had set by the morning.

its going to be rust protection, wouldnt worry too much about it, will save you havingto do them again anytime soon. I had mine done on my old C36 and 4 years later, still no rust to be seen, had the same tar like stuff on there!

Swozza - I'd be really interested in a recommended bodyshop in this area - especially if they can get a good result with silver.
Are you able to identify them - I'm sure they charged you VAT.
I don't think I can use PMs yet on this forum.

Gents

I've been holding off until my new camera arrives. So I've taken some with my iphone, not the best but you get the idea. I've since spoken to the company that did the respray. After i'd washed the car and looked carefully I could tell that the front doors haven't been resprayed. Not because the colour matching is bad but because what I've had done looks showroom, new (Arches and back doors). Probably my mistake. I'm booked in again to get the front doors done. By then I should have my new camera.

The place is Malin Motor Bodies.

Metallic Silver is one of the hardest colours to match with lots of traps for the unwary. The slightest variation in colour or reflectivity due to differing metallic particle angles or thickness of clear coat will be interpreted by the human eye as a colour difference or "newness of finish" Sometimes this can be helped by refinishing the older paint on untreated panels and differences can diminish over a few months as the new paint gets surface "damaged" to more closely resemble the finish of the older panels.

I must admit, that is probably the worst aspect of owning a silver car IMHO - always seems to be the most 'obvious' colour to match (or not).

I can't help but notice almost every silver car that has had some paintwork :o

I've asked friends if they can see anything, its only when I piont it out that they notice, only one noticed anything and that was 'some b@stard nicked your V6 badge'. Can you believe they are about £50 each from MB!

I'm a bit of a perfectionist. They still have the colour made up, enough to do the front doors even though they don't need doing. So I'm getting them done.

Did they do the bonnet?

I was chatting to lopes80 about this yesterday - contrary to my long term thoughts it *is* possible to get a very, very good match on 744 brilliant silver. 90% of bodyshops probably won't be able to get that close though.

Still annoying all the same, I totally understand why you're getting the doors done (you can just see it in your pic above).

Bite the bullet and all that - at least you'll be pleased with it :)

No the bonnet wasn't done. I am happy and if it wasn't an AMG I would have left it there. Once I have the front doors done and badges back on I'll post new pics.

Thanks for the recommendation - (my neck of the woods too!)
I will mention you when I take my 743-744-745 silver mobilo warranty blotchmeister along.
cheers

update - collected the car, recommendation was for complete offside respray. Very very happy with the result (and the price). New paint looks so good I will have the nearside and bonnet done in due course.
Note that I have had the entire side and rear bumper done for little more than twice the cost of the previous double botched smart repair. Paint for paint's sake isn't my normal choice, but this waterpaint Merc rustfest can only be improved by the addition of 'real' paint wherever possible.
I'd like to really recommend Malin Motor Bodies (just north of sheffield): they even collected my car when I was too dozy to remember to deliver it to them!
