Very poor practice by dealership - possibly my last Mercedes

AND, now it's an MOT failure, too... so putting it off doesn't really help, because it will need to be fixed before the next MOT is due.
As often said, toy may explain it to them, you cannot understand it for them!

Apologies for drifting OT, this thread reinforces why it’s better to go to an recommended independent specialist for repairs and servicing especially after the warranty period is finished.
A Mercedes dealer will always have a stream of customers because of perceived premium service. There’s no guarantee an experienced fitter will work on the car, you might be unlucky and it could be the apprentice. Who needs premium service anyway, a service is a service.
An Indy has to give good service or it’s toast, you’re very unlikely to have a poor fitter work on your car at an Indy their reputation is too valuable.

Back to OP’s problems, there must be a Indy Merc Specialist in Lancashire; suggest paying them to assess your car?

I was going to add a response to the OP's original post but having now read a couple of the subsequent responses to other posters, I won't bother.

Given that the car presumably ran OK for a year maybe it is just a decorative light?
Maybe everyone is being conned out of money to turn off a light that means very little in the real world?

Given that cars generally have some sort of interactive display these days it seems rather short sighted that manufacturers generally don't provide more supporting diagnostic information that can be looked up via the menus to give some reasonable indication as to why the light is on.

Cos they want you to go to the main dealer who start with charging for a diagnostic report then the flood gates open

no no just put a sticker over it and ignore it...for a year

Actually no sense and far more effective if you have a good indy. An EML light could be 20 things, so if they list the 20 things the enwaery will replace 20 things on a whim one fixes the issue. A solid indy knows how to decipher codes and isolate the cause.

Plus why would they cannabalise thier garage business.....thats where they make business

When you drove out and the EML came on, you should have turned around and dumped it back there. You were lucky they didn't fob you off with the fact it was left so long and caused any damage as at the time there was no way to determine it was just a Nox sensor. The tape to cover it is just a no no. I had a similar issue recently with an ABS sensor, I drove out of the garage (not dealership) and the light came back on. I turned around and went straight back to cover myself. It was sorted straight away.

I can understand your frustration with the dealership and I'm with you on that, it would infuriate me that they can't be bothered to check if you have a warranty or service plan or not. The diagnostic fee is standard, but if you had said to them it's under warranty, they would have waived the fee if the faulty part is a warrantable item. If you didn't want to risk it (I don't know what is covered under your warranty) then a code reader is advisable.

There are some dealers that are better than others, even within the same brand. I wouldn't change the car if I really liked it, I would change who works on it, especially if it's not under new car warranty. I'm sure indys can claim on warranties if they are VAT registered and use genuine parts? Someone can advise

Maybe people who get serious engine failures have done so after putting a bit of insulation tape over an "irritating light ?"

Fully accept that many warnings are false, but it's still a stupid idea to ignore an engine warning light on a three year old car for a year, in the belief it's probably nothing. If you're too tight-fisted to take your expensive car into a garage to get the thing checked, buy a second hand icarsoft OBD reader to read the code for yourself, and then resell the icarsoft afterwards. (Cost maybe £20)

I agree, I would get it sorted rather than put a piece of tape over it. But I bet in a lot of cases the sensor is reporting it's own fault rather than doing what it is supposed to be doing and reporting a fault in the function that it is "sensing". That would explain why they go faulty after a s/w "upgrade" (sic). It is a shame that MB has made the ownership experience of adblue equipped cars so poor - it is not specifically the cost - it is the stories that we see on here with owners "being taken for fools".

Let’s give the OP a break. We’re all car enthusiasts who would agree that that putting tape over a warning light is stupid and thats been made clear x10.
Anybody got something constructive to add?

People gave him a break.

It was the rather pathetic, arrogant and childish response that caused the objection.

Telling someone to "shut your mouth" Is this really what we need?

Anyway, we have all moved on, they have had informed and intelligent responses.

Has anyone else noticed a developing trend on this forum? A new or older member who is not one of the "regulars" posts on a topic, they then get into a bit of an altercation with one or more long standing members who tell them that they need to show a bit more respect to the "establishment, longer serving members" of the forum then the poster disappears but the thread carries on without them for several pages, then someone notices and says "where's the OP gone?".
I guess from the OPs perspective they did not feel welcome and they cleared off.
Maybe there should be a bit more slack given?

Maybe people like the OP here should not immediately resort to throwing childish insults and demanding that others with a contrary view do not comment.

It very much works both ways.

My brother put down a deposit on a car being sold by what's supposed to be the largest MB dealership in the country. They sold the car from under him and he then had to take them to court to get them to return his deposit. Strange practices.

You got told off like a little naughty school boy now get over it chap.. maybe next time offer a little help/advice instead of antagonising the OP with your smart **** replies.. thats my 2p’s worth anyway!

So you are chastising DSM1000 for chastising culpano? I could chastised you for doing it, but what's the purpose here?

You may have noticed that we already have sufficient replies from the OP that make no sense so your "contribution" isn't required.

I really have no idea and less interest in whatever it is you are referring too.

In case you have trouble with facts and timing the OP was challenged (in many ways) because of their post on a public forum by a number of members.

They didn't like this.

They were the ones throwing childish insults from the start.

They were the ones demanding that no one replied unless they agreed.

Now I have no idea what your agenda is but you are complaining about something that happened days ago and all of the grown ups have moved on.

I knew there was a reason you are on the ignore list. Yet another pathetic example of mouth open and brain in neutral.

Well said but you cannot argue with stupid.
