I am curious as to how the owner kept the car. In this modern age I thought insurance companies had contracts with salvage companies?

Did the owner actually claim, or perish the very unlikely thought, was it insured? Did the incident happen on the road?

I take on-board your point about smoking, but my first thought was arson?

Sorry to ask so many questions

Regarding MangoMans point, I think that fire would destroy part of any wiring loom?

Yes John, I hear what you are saying re: insurance, etc. Strange???

But the reason for my belief that it was, or is electrical is that it looks like the fire started in or in front of where the Battery is situated, and migrated to the rest of the car. Photo attached.

Has anyone seen a battery go up..... Scary es-aitch-one-tee!

Hi MangoMan,
Please do NOT think I doubt what your saying, I am by nature a very inquisitive pain in the proverbial. Your point is very validand of course a possibility.

I'm sure there is a perfectly acceptable, logical explanation.

Regards,
John

Pity there's no pictures of the interior, might have been useful to estimate costs...

Just waiting for the usual "bit of T-cut and polish" comment. :)

Hmmm. Interesting thought Sherlock.

Nah,
I think it would need something more like this:

Engine and gearbox would be a good buy for someone with an existing car with a blown engine/transmission. Sourcing new wiring and electrical components which probably include the ECU AND ABS/ESP units etc would probably cost as much as the £5,500 asked for the car??

Looks well beyond t-cut and polish.

Back to black and some electrical tape :)

looks electrical or very localised to the area around the passenger foorwell to me.

Anything thrown through the windows would have had to go in through the side (the windscreen looks as though it melted) and would probably have caused a more central fire.

Cigarette end dropped in the footwell could easily cause that kind of damage.
