VIN from Reg number needed

Ha yup and who doesn't love a 'nana!

I don't want to get caught up in data protection, I just want to show people what spec is on the car.
BTW, you have a lovely Merc, even if I'm a BMW man. I looked. :)

Sounds like you need to create a webpage where entering a Reg # takes you to a "pay up and you'll get the details" page before getting the info.
Once you are paid, you getting a bill will already be covered.

Hi All,

I'll try to post this a few places, I have written an API tool that allows me to extract the VIN from the UKDVLA database. You just pop in the reg and I can interrogate the database to pull pretty much anything, from tyres to history and even value at auction. The recent GDPR Data Protection Laws have made all the existing systems out there obsolete, and I can meet the requirements a number of ways.

But, here's the catch, I need to pay each time I interrogate the database, but its pretty cheap, it works out about £0.25 (25p) for a full data pull.

I have also written the script which then pings the BMW database API and I can pull the full spec on the BMW in question, I have a BMW so naturally this is where I have put in the effort. This is particularly useful where you see a BMW you are interested in and the owner doesn't know what their car has made at the factory. Again, very comprehensive. I think I can do it for Ford and Seat too without too much hassle. I'll look at other manufacturers if there is an interest?

So here's the question, by way of a reply to this message, would anyone be willing to help me cover the costs for the hosting and API? I am happy to do all the programming myself for nothing, but I don't get excited about paying for something others will use on my dime.

Ideas/suggestions welcome? We can make this as simple or complex as we like, for now I can get a full factory spec on a BMW by popping in the reg number. Pretty neat.

I'm very interested in what your proposing. I actually found this forum the same day you posted on it, for the same reason you have. I buy and sell auction vehicles so the extended details are very handy when it comes to my valuation etc, I used to use Blue Print Live but as previously explained it is no more.

I actually have an upcoming auction in which a tool like this could prove very useful. Perhaps you can shed some light on how you got the api for the data or how we can move forward with this idea. you haven't allowed private messages or else I would of discussed this there as I'm not much of a forum man.

Hi Mark, I need to have made 30 posts before I can send and receive private messages. I'm making good progress!
Interestingly I have access to the BCA Auction rates, and the Glass National Auction values and while they need to be searched one by one they make for compelling reading! And yes I am interested in collaborating for this, I have the ability and the data its just putting it out there. I will message you as soon as I am able to!

Ok I have had it confirmed, the VIN number is not considered 'anonymised' any longer since GDPR, and cannot be made available to the 'consumer'.
So that's why we have seen a sudden termination of these services.

That's going to make buying used cars much more difficult. Dealers and traders are not very good at posting full spec. If you know the model very well, you can work out a lot of options from pictures if there are detailed one. But "hidden" options will be much more difficult to confirm.

So am I right in thinking a service like this is likely to be even more useful?

BTW, Blueprint website doesn't work any more, it was replaced with different one. It's a real shame, as it was also able to pull reg from VIN.

Seems to be working again for me?

It stopped working for me about 3 weeks ago then after a week started working again when I registered with Bilstein- like you guys it stopped again this week but I haven’t tried it yet today

I actually got an email from the Bilstein Group confirming that GDPR regulations mean they have closed blueprint live. Their parts system is what is left. Confirmed yesterday.

Screen grab of the email attached so you can see I'm not losing my marbles.

partsfinder.bilsteingroup.com works great... for finding Febi parts. But it is no longer showing the car's VIN when inputing the VRM, unless someone found a way to do this on the new Febi Bilstein site?

I just copied this from the Blue Print site using my own reg# and got the Vin#.
Seems its working for some of us:dk:

When I log-in to the old site it just takes me into the new site (i.e. I no longer get the 'catalogue' view in your screen shot) :(

I had the same last week. Now I get the above. It makes no sense at all, especially if this info is now supposed to be out of the public domain:dk:

I can't logon with my old username, password reset doesn't work and I don't see a link to register. So looks like my account is gone.

Strange how they now can't display the VIN but it's openly displayed on just about every car out there!?

It works for me but another member is having the same problem as you

Same for me too.
